I have
no predators. Not yet. I've only seen one possum I'm my 2 1/2 yrs in this house. My backyard is fenced by a 6 ft wood fence which I know wouldn't keep anything out if they really wanted in, but so far it's been really quiet in my backyard. The coop I have now is just like that but smaller and without the roost bar. The bottom is covered in wire and I leave the wire door open all the time. The girls put themselves to bed at night and go out in the morning when they want to. It's not 100% safe but nothing really is and they are so happy. I want another coop so I can get a few more chickens lol. I don't NEED another coop but you guys are just a bunch of enablers and very bad.
More is always good!

Got a little work done on the coop. It has a door now!!! I need more hardware, hinges, latches....BLAH!!!

Wow! Looking really good. I know your so ready to be finished with it!

Food question for the newbie. I am considering using Organic, Naturally Free Layer Chicken Feed, 25lbs (http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Naturally-Layer-Chicken-25lbs/dp/B0068SP1XE/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t ). Has anyone used this? I'm willing to pay the shipping costs as the closest store is 90 miles away in San Angelo.

Also, do you or can you combine it with this:F.M. Brown's Encore Natural Egg Layer Booster Daily Diet for Pets, 20-Pound (http://www.amazon.com/F-M-Browns-Natural-Booster-20-Pound/dp/B0042FMBEM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top )

Thanks in advance!!! I have no idea what I'm doing. Lol I'm reading as much as I can!
not sure how far you are from Mineola? but i think much closer for you. there is an organic feed store there Aunt Cindi's 903 857 2418 .. i fed some of it a few years ago ..i also fed some coyote creek ..had great results with both.

Good morning yall!!! new chick question. My second set of hatchlings are due at the end of this month....Here in our great state of Texas, what are the typical vaccines we should be administering and other new chick procedures as far as medical goes?

Thanks!!!
some have answered this and if i were showing a lot i might have a different answer. i raise my birds to be as healthy as i can. so i dont vacinate for anything i dont worm .. i raise them much like my grandparents did . my feed is different than they had .they had no gmo anything and not mucy store bought anything . but i want them to be resistant to diseases by natural selection not by how much antibotics and medicines i can give them. i read an article on broilers how some strains of bacteria were becoming resistant to antibotics because the chicks get them from day one to day 45 or so which is the day they die. the article talked about this was affecting humans who eat them. just my opinion not right for everyone just right for the way i raise mine. :) good luck however you decide to raise yours.

I too would like to know what vaccines we should do. I am incubating my first set of eggs, hopefully to hatch the first of next month. Any advice would be welcomed!

just don't under stand all kids out of pool, Mom time!?
I don't put my ducklings in water till they come out of the brooder and into the house, at which point they can go into the kiddie pools. At this age they don't have any feathers, and so no oil protecting them. You need to be sure to dry them very well so they don't become chilled.

Last night a dear friends son was life flighted to the ER. He had been smoking “K2” or “Synthetic marijuana” or “Kush” what ever you want to call it. He had a seizure and his heart stopped. They live in a very rural area of East Texas and it took a while for life flight to get there. He was resuscitated but is in a coma at this time.

People, please have a talk with your loved ones and pass this story along to them. This crap is illegal but is still sold in convenience stores (all over Houston) as incense and people are smoking it. Marijuana is still illegal in Texas so people buy that K2 stuff to smoke because it is cheaper and safer to buy. I am not saying the kid should have been smoking pot instead of K2 but no one has ever overdosed or been in a coma from smoking marijuana.

Please pray for my friends to be strong and their son to have a good recovery. His name is Garret.

Thanks
Ken

Y'all got my prayers folks. Wish folks would quit the quest to get chemically high. There are much better ways to find happiness. So sad.

How hard it is to vaccinate a chick? I've never given a shot to anything before. Can you get these at the feed store, Or do I need to take them to the vet?

It is not hard to vaccinate. LT is a nasal or eye drop. Mareks is a needle of some sort. Not sure what fowl pox is. I haven't vaccinated for Mareks or Fowl Pox yet. I'll do everyone in the summer for fowl pox, and do the Mareks before I get the chicks outside.

Forgot to add, you buy it from a supplier and it costs about $30 to have it shipped (with cold packs and and in its own little cooler). Shipping is the same for one vaccine vial or more. The vaccines are for 500 or 1000 doses, but they don't come in smaller vials. The most expensive is about $30. You have to use it quickly because it is a live virus.
