Some silkie chicks
I want to say TS in Mineola has silkie chicks. Have you try your local TS or feed store? There are also some places in Texas you can order them from. I ordered my chicks from Caklehatchery and they have been great. I haven't lost any of them. I just looked and they have silkie also. http://www.cacklehatchery.com/silkie.htm
They are cute, I didn't even look at them when I ordered mine!!!

I know they get chicks in on Wednesdays. There is also a place in Lindale, I don't remember the name of it but it is a farm place on 37 and their sign said they had chicks also. Now I don't know if they have the ones you are looking for but if your out you might run by and look.

I stand corrected--one species of mites, the Northern Fowl Mite, lives on the host.  The other species, Chicken Mites, lives off the host.  Yes, check at night.  Check while wearing white cotton gloves (so you can see them on your hands)

I bought Elector PSP that can be used on laying hens with no withdrawal time.  It is fairly expensive, but very effective.  A vet who raises Cochins recommended it.  I've never had a mite issue, but the new birds I bought came with a lot of lice eggs on them.  I dipped the new birds in a Permectrin II every two weeks and used the Elector spray after the poultry shows, plus bathed them in Adams Flea and Tick shampoo before the shows.  I'll dip them again in a week if the weather is good.  I'm not sure about withdrawal for Permectrin II, and if there is any, I'll just do a routine spray with Elector PSP which is incredibly effective.

You have to concentrate around the vent since that is the preferred place for them to go.

My understanding is the mites and lice are really easy to get, especially if you don't make sure new birds are quarantined and clear of parasites.  Infestations are persistent, too.  Most people don't check their birds.  A bird can be horribly infested, to the point where it dies and the owner doesn't realize.

Okay thanks. I now have a new item for my to do list: check chickens coop at night for creepy crawly things.
The Elector PS is for spraying the coop? I wonder if lavender would be a preventative? A Chicken keeper's work is never done. Whew

Okay, so I did it. I moved them from the brooder in the garage to the coop.

When they first got in there they stayed huddled together like the boogey monster was going to jump out at any minute.

I took the advice of one of the members on here and purchased the 3 gallon metal hanging feeder from TSC. The top was open, so I also bought a large funnel to serve as a top and also keep the birds from sitting up there and pooping in the feed. I hung it with some barbless fence wire.

Here is a shot of the PVC\Chicken nipple auto-watering system. There is a black hose that goes out to the right that you can barely see. It connects to a 65 gallon rainwater barrel. I started filling the barrel with water and found a pin hole about halfway up. Not sure if I should try to fix it or return it and try another one. I'm thinking return, but danggit Sam's Club is like 28 miles away!
I concerned about the chickens figuring out how to use the chicken nipples. I put them in the coop around 5pm and still have not seen one bird try the waterer.

Yes....this is me checking on them every 30 minutes or so. First night without a night light and outside on their own!!! I'm kinda a nervous wreck, LOL!

They are going to love it. Hope you get some sleep. I know exactly how you feel. I was the same way with my girls in the beginning.

The Elector PSP does both the premises and the birds. I have the amounts to mix small amounts (2.3cc in 32 ounzes water). What I like is that there is not withdrawal times for meat or eggs. It is a very safe product. I tried to find the link to the explanation of how it works, but couldn't find it.

Here's a link:
