Texas

Here is the newest hatch from yesterday. This one is fine. Normal feet and is already following Belle's instructions on how to peck chick feed. Also introduced it to water. Had to put a big handful of my polished stones in the bowl.

It has two tiny black dots on it's head and a small black spot on the left wing.

It's so FLUFFY!!!!

I've got chicks on the way!

We were going to just get adults, but due to availability, cost, bonding, etc., we decided to order chicks.

I want to keep them inside the first week so that I can monitor them frequently. We have some large boxes that would probably work. After that, into the garage. My dad suggested using a water trough in there, but I have to see how big it is. The temperature would probably control how long they would need to be in the smaller trough before they could be put out into the coop. You all know Texas weather... I came up with plans for a brooder to build that was either a 4'x6' or a 3'x6', but that would take time and the cost of materials. The trough would be free, but unless it is one of the large ones, I'm not convinced it would be big enough, even for bantam chicks, for all that long..

I used a watermelon box I got free from Walmart for the first couple of weeks to house my 21 chicks. Worked great. You just need something, a sheet or make a top to cover it.

I know nobody really cares, but we had a first today. We have 9 birds and got 9 eggs, for the first time!!!

Congrats on the eggs!!! I can't wait until my chicks are old enough to lay. I'm looking at another 4-5 months.

Wow! They have gotten so big!!! How do you post a video on here? Do you have to load it onto youtube or something first?

My DF looked at me funny when I told him the spare room when we finish building the new house ( three bedroom ) isn't going to be a guest room. Its gonna be for my incubator and chicks. He seems to think its for when the in laws visit. Doesn't he know that's what we keep the travel trailer for?

@Lisa ~ Go ahead and convert it! You can just have an in-house brooder room!!! :)

It started out innocently.  I had a nice box with 6 chicks.  No problem.  I made the mistake of going to the feed store and I picked up 3 more.  Box is getting smaller and smaller.  I started leaving the top off so they could fly to the top of the box.  Next thing I know they are walking around on the floor.  O what the heck, newspapers and shavings here they come!!  The thing is if I have the bathroom converted.......chicken math anyone???  I am soooooo doomed!

Lisa :)

The bathroom??? You've lost your mind! Lol

So cute!

Wow!  That is awesome!  I can't wait to get an egg. It is going to be a bit though.

I will help you look too.  Did they lady in Honey Grove ever get back to you?

Isn't it great to work from home? :)

It's been a stressful day.  Glad it is almost over.  The twins I watch drove me crazy today. I'm surprised I didn't have to pull the girl off the ceiling.  Spring fever hyperness has really hit!

Thanks for helping! What lady are you talking about? Did you tell me about someone and I missed it??!!

New development - I'm heavily craving sweets. So much so, I just made blueberry bread and ate the entire loaf. Oh strange cravings, please end soon. I can't keep up with all these swings! That didn't hit the spot so now I'm doing oranges and strawberry yogurt with a glass of milk.

The chicks really had fun toppling over each other with the blueberry bread crumbs. Ignore dirty brooder, look at that stink eye the roo in front is giving me!

Lisa that is GREAT!! I wish it was to wear I could get in with mine. I do move the screen back and let them fly out and walk around on top and Lulabella likes to get on my shoulder and ride around. LOL

Well, it's been long day.... long week. The first part of the week was so great!! I had so much energy and felt so good... but the last two days has been bad. Of course with dad in the hospital today was just going to be off anyway.
Here's hoping tomorrow is sunny and bright.

Where's the shifty eyed smiley?? I'm technically not supposed to say anything yet... To anyone we know. Not breaking the rules!. Having rough luck so far and not quite into the safety of the second trimester just yet. But, yes, were expecting around November/December.

Didn't realize fatigue and cravings started so early. But also didn't realize how many different smells I encountered daily.
