Does anyone here know if I can use oil based paint to paint the roosts in my chicken coop?
would that cause a health risk?

I am only asking because I have some left over from another project and was thinking white roosts would make little dots more visible.

I, personally, do not paint any thing on the inside of the coop except the floor. Not sure if is toxic after it dries, but why take a chance. As far as oil-based, if you decide to paint the roost, I would let it cure for a bout a week before putting your birds in. Oil-based paint takes longer to cure than latex, especially in high humidity.

Hi I live near Spring and have had chickens for 30 years.

I am starting over fresh this year due to losing almost all my birds last year when I decided to use ACV in their water. I didn't dose much but many died. Then the ones that were left got attacked by a stray dog. It was heartbreaking.

I've ordered eggs and will be setting them soon.

Welcome to the thread! I am sorry for your loss, that must have been devastating

. How were you able to determine that ACV killed your girls? I have never heard of that before.

Hey y'all!! I live North of Dallas (by McKinney) in Leonard ;)

We just bought acreage and are settling in with about
- 40 chickens (light brahmas, Easter eggers, Jersey giants, Barred rocks, RIR's & Black Australorps)
- a few barn cats
- 3 sweet dogs (unless you mess with their chicks or ppl)
- do my kids count ;) if so 3 babies

I've started constantly running the bator to hatch pure silver brahmas (selling/trading
fertile eggs too)

LOVE Texas, born here and God willing die here!

So excited to see so many Texans on here!!

Bnjrob, are you all using this shade screen for the garden, the chickens, or both? How do you have yours set up?

Thanks,

Lisa :)
Both. Although this will be the first year to use shade cloth on a wide scale for pretty much all the garden plants instead of just trying it on a few.

For the chicken runs we put grommets into the shade cloth and use zip ties and sometimes carabiners or rope to attach it to the run. It goes on the top and then down the sides as well. I leave a 2 ft tall space at the bottom of the side panels though, because the shade cloth can block the wind too much and they need to have what little wind there is in summer. Had originally tried to run the panels all the way to the ground, but without the air flow at the bottom, the heat was getting trapped in the runs and then the chickens also couldn't see out of the runs with it hanging all the way to the ground.

We have hoops that cover the garden beds. Have the snap clamps for putting covers on the hoops but can also use zip ties to stick the shade cloth onto the hoops through the mesh.

Have also just zip tied the shade cloth onto t-posts and wooden garden trellis posts for a quick fix.
