bt03: Thanks for the info. We are looking for layers, not meat chickens anyhoo. But that's good to know and interesting. I wonder why they have bad hearts. Weird. I'm trying to sponge up as much info as I can before I make a final purchase.

I see there are a number of folks from Leander here. I know some of my neighbors here in Leander have chickens because I hear the roosters in the morning. That is part of the reason I decided to start doing it.

I'm learning as I go with four 6 week old australorp chicks.

I didn't know what to get but I read they are pretty good egg layers and hot weather resistant.

I'm kind of tempted to just get the mystery mix from the hatchery and letting fate decide what I get. Re: the heat....we're putting up a greenhouse and working on the coop this weekend....I guess we'll be drinking a lot of water!

Nice pens Josh. I have some similar. I made a rack of conditioning pens out of poly barrels this year. They are much cheaper to make.
