So clipping both wings is good?  I didn't want them hurting themselves with off-balance flight attempts.  With both wings clipped, they can flutter, but not fly high...right?

Well, I reckon you will be my guinea pig!! Ken makes a valid point, I am just not 100% sold yet. I read where one woman watched her chicken climb a six foot chain link fence by flapping it's clipped wings and using its feet!!!

You have a point, David. People think chickens are just dumb birds. We know different. The point is, she was using her feet!! She couldn't "FLY" out!!LOL

From what I have read, this is the way to go. Their flight feathers, with their wings clipped are not enough to support the weight. They can only get so high. If they are off balance, they can surelt hurt themselves. I makes perfect sense to me.

Everything I've read said clipping just one wing could cause injury to birds who try to fly & find themselves significantly off-balance.

Most of the things I've read said clipping both wings will minimize injury from balance issues, and allow the birds to flutter away from threats without being able to fly high enough to get over fences or into trees.

We love keeping our ladies free-range, but they were flying over our 8ft fence and perching in our neighbors' tree every night & I was worried they'd fly off or get eaten. Now they should be able to remain free-range without us worrying about accidental escape attempts.

Oh darn it, you got me on a technicality!!! Lol

As a disclaimer I don't even have chickens yet so I try not to give advice on them!! If I comment about birds it is something I picked up doing research. I do know basic construction and hunting/trapping!!

Our chicken yard is surrounded by 8ft wood fence (typical back yard fencing). There are two trees in their yard, with the lowest branches being approximately 8ft high...and the top of their coop is approximately 10ft high. They were able to easily get on top of their coop, on top of their fence, into their own tree & into our neighbors' tree. The next step is "out there", where anything could happen. I didn't enjoy having them "grounded" to their coop/run until my husband & I could tag-team 'em & clip their wings. We shall see how well this works. Wish us luck!
