Texas

My sebight Becka wound up keeping 6 chicks. The last one was making good progress about 3:30. Checked again at 4:30 found it up in the water bowl. She tried to kill it. Has 2 peck wounds on it. That's what she did with the dud eggs, kicked one into the water pan. It didn't drown but was soaked and cold. I grabbed an old sock wrapped it up and sat with it in the sun and dried it's feathers. Now in a bowl, inside a coffee can sitting on a heating pad. Is much stronger. See nothing wrong with it. I guess she decide no more because it hatched 4 days later than the first.
So we will be momma hens

Our chicken yard is surrounded by 8ft wood fence (typical back yard fencing).  There are two trees in their yard, with the lowest branches being approximately 8ft high...and the top of their coop is approximately 10ft high.  They were able to easily get on top of their coop, on top of their fence, into their own tree & into our neighbors' tree.  The next step is "out there", where anything could happen.  I didn't enjoy having them "grounded" to their coop/run until my husband & I could tag-team 'em & clip their wings.  We shall see how well this works.  Wish us luck!  :p

I'm going to check on them in a minute. It's about an hour before their bedtime, and this is usually when they make a break for it. I'm hoping everyone is still in their yard.

Look who is talking up a storm now huh?

Btw, I clipped both my chickens wings and their flight is now very low. They were getting pretty high up, but now can't even make it over my 3 foot garden fence. So I have had success with clipping both wings.
