My Ebony girl was re-injured last night, Daisy mounted and bred her, and Ebony was stepped on during the round up to put everyone to bed. She can't put any weight on her right leg and is actually using her wing to scoot around. I tried penning her up by herself, but she slammed her body against the sides of the cage trying to rejoin the other ducks. I put her in the nursery with the remaining 2 goslings and not only did she settle, but the goslings are no longer screaming bloody murder when I leave them to do chores. I am soaking her in warm water baths again, both with Epsom salt and without. I think I am going to keep her away from everyone for a week or so to give her leg a chance to fully heal before making her deal with the bigger ducks again.
Any other suggestions?

Yeah, my 2-week old and 3 1-week old chicks were "fighting" this morning--an activity which often consists of the little ones chasing around the big one more than vice versa. My husband went and pulled the larger one, Ginger, out, and held and talked to her for a while. (He's convinced Ginger is a rooster, though, based on the size of her feet.) I don't know if it was how he was holding her, or what, but after a few minutes she started chirping continuously, like a little fire alarm going off, so I took her from him and let her relax on my hand for a while.

Our girls weren't out of bed yet, so in a way, getting to spend a little time with the chicks in the morning is very relaxing and helps me get more ready for heading off to work.

What other breeds of chickens do you have? How do BCM'S compare, body size, egg size, and number of eggs laid, with BR, RIR, BA, BO, and SLW hens? I am looking for heavy breed brown egg laying hens. Wanting to breed better body size, growth, egg laying skills, and broodiness into my flock. I do want some EE for fun egg color, but main goal is self sustaining dual purpose flock for personal use. This year all my ladies are pullets and I haven't started breeding them yet, but I am trying to think what breeds to add to improve my flock with. My chickens will be mongrels, but as long as they are sweet and get the job done I will be happy.
.
I have two EE(one will lay blue eggs one green), a red sex link, and a Black Australop. BCM lay dark chocolate almost black eggs. I was excited about adding another color to my egg basket. They do not lay as many eggs per year as some other breeds(my others should lay around 300 eggs per year) she will probably lay only around 150-180. They are known to go broody so if you are looking for that its a good breed. They are better with people than a lot of other breeds. Good with other breeds and ok with confinement. If it werent for the reduced egg production they would be the perfect bird!

That poor baby girl....I hope she will be ok and make a full recovery. Maybe the goslings will be good for her as well. Is Daisy a mis-named drake?
