Let's just hope she don't get a cut over her other eye so I have to do Both sides! Lol.
I have some stuff called Farnams blue lotion,,i wonder if it's the same as Blu kote.

Here's whats in it...acriflavin, methyl violet, technical furfural and urea plus ethyl alcohol and propylene glycol.
I use it on my dogs. i don't want to use it on my birds if it isn't the same stuff and safe for them. My concern is the alcohol could burn the eye.

To start I think I'll clean the eye area with some weak tea and put some neosporin on it.
My marans eye looks like your baby's does

ahhh but you are fixing to downsize your flock!!!
I know!!!!
I have so much on my plate...I'll have more time to spend with them if I wait til next Spring.

I am down one more baby chick. I had to cull one this morning as his/her yolk sack did not absorb and they were suffering. I wish I had caught it yesterday, but alas this is what happens sometimes. I now have 8 lil chickies. 4 quail, 2 blue silver quail, and two silver quail. I hope all of these darlings make it.
I'm sorry...fingers crossed for the rest!

Purple looks good on her.  :thumbsup   Hope she heals quickly!  :)

The cut over her eye is small, it will be gone after a few days if the chickens don't peck at it. I'm more concerned about the gash on her toe. It's deep, and I may have to remove/cut some of it, dirt is getting pack in there and I am very worried about infection. I keep trying to seal it but she waddles all over in the muddiest places. Just like a duck, huh? Lol. The location of the gash makes a bandage a problem, it's on the bottom of her toe, close to the webbing. Poor Daisy may have to join Ebony in the nursey for a few days if I do have to cut some skin away. Hoping to avoid that though. I'm cleaning it 2X a day with peroxide and Betadine, then covering with Blu-kote.

The ingredients of Blu-kote, straight off the label are sodium propionate 9.1%, gentian violet 1%, acriflavine 0.15%, in a special base of water, urea, glycerine, isopropyl alcohol 47% by volume.

Ok thanks it is different. I think what I have would be ok for wounds and such. it's for horses, live stock and dogs not to be used on cats. Gonna play it safe and just use the neo and a tea wash. Keep her in the little pen for a while to see what happens. She isn't doing much and I don't want her to get picked on in her weakened condition so she will get spoiled for a bit.

This may sound silly but can you make some kind of booty for her foot I don't know maybe an old sock or baby booty and secure it with the streatchy athletic tape. it would still get wet and I guess you would take it off at night but it might keep some of the mud out of the wound,,,if you can even get her to let you put it on her or her wear it and get around. You can make booties for chicks...why not for a duck?

With how ducks swim and find the muddiest places to forage, the sock would end up being more of a problem than a fix.

Are you interested in any particular geese? I have African and Chinese geese. 4 of each. I brought the Africans as sexed females, and the Chinese are straight runs. Was hoping for 2 males but so far only know of 1 male, Snow. One of my youngest Africans has leg trouble, I'm trying to help her but I may have to cull her if she don't improve. Which saddens me, a lot. I thought she had the beginnings of Perosis, so I have been giving vitamins and minerals. I know it's not niacin as she and all the geese get that regularly to prevent leg problems. Her legs are also a grey color, which is not normal for Africans, their legs start black and turn a dark orange. All my geese are from Ideal, and this is the 2nd gosling with leg/foot problems. Another gosling, a Chinese, had 2 toes stuck together on each foot, I performed a minor toe separation surgery and she is fine now. I also lost another gosling, a Chinese to niacin defiency, now have Gertrude's, the African, leg problems going on. All my chickens and the Cayuga ducklings are also from Ideal. My rooster and the crested ducks are the only ones from other sources, and because of the neurological problems associated with the crest in ducks, the crested will NOT breed. They can be surrogate mothers though if they wish,

Next year I am ordering hatching Chinese goose eggs from a lady on the goose forums. She has brown Chinese, pied Chinese, splash Chinese, even tufted Chinese geese. Since my Chinese are whites I am looking into the brown, pied, and splash colors for my flock. In this way I will get outside blood in case inbreeding at Ideal is the issue with all the geese leg problems, and add color to my flock at the same time. Lol. I do plan on allowing the Africans and Chinese tobreed together to increase size, bigger table birds if i can bring myself to cull the geese when the time comes. Also looking for hatching Cayuga duck eggs for next year to get outside blood for the ducks. Both of my roosters, whoever the 2nd one turns out to be, will not be from Ideal stock, so chickens shouldn't be inbred. Plus I am going to mix the RIR, SLW, BR, BO, and BA ladies to the 2 roosters to open the gene pool more. I am not worried about pure bred chickens, just healthy chickens for meat and eggs. I think @AussieChick is going to sell me 1 of her show line BA Roos. She lives like 10-20 minutes away, so it is no trouble to arrange pickup. The sire of her cockerels was 16lbs, so they should add size to my chicks next year. She also is interested in learning to cull her own birds, and I am willing to show her what I know. I might end up with a chicken lover friend close enough to actually be able to help each other out, which is great. Doing all this alone, I know more than the rest of my family at this point, has been hard and I could use some help/advice from time to time myself.

Sorry for long post. Just be careful with ordering only from Ideal. I truely believe their stock is inbred.

I'm wanting to try a couple out to process. We 'ended up' with ducks this year and although I'm not happy with the mess and extra cleaning (or the fact that they are in a pen I could add more chickens to, lol) we really liked how they processed out. After pricing duck at the store we've thought about expanding our palates and raising a few different birds for meat. We have a few turkey this year too. We bought an extra chest freezer we need to fill up at some point.

We had a pair of African geese growing up and the gander was EVIL. I'm not sure what age we would process a gander and if we would do it early enough to avoid the hormones kicking in.

Do you feel like your Ideal birds are growing out slow? Our first 2 ducks were from Privett, bought at local TSC, and they grew quickly. I haven't had any issue with our Ideal chickens but that's all I've gotten from them. Our other 2 ducks were from Cackle and grow well too.

I need to break down and just order some to try.
