from your neighbor just to the east of ya. Trust me, you have coyotes. Hear about them on the news on a regular basis. You just haven't seen 'em yet. I know I've got 'em since I can hear them "singing" at night back in the pasture behind me. Little nerve wracking when I consider my chickens but I've also got one of those little barking yapping things called a dog who keeps my cat in training when it comes to scaring off the yotes. She's a large Bengal cat and has already tangled with one yote who thought she would be easy pickings. He lit out with bloody scratches on his head and rump while she kicked back and smoothed out her fur. Not a mark on her. Now the barking yapping thing that is supposed to scare off things like that was sitting on the porch giving me a blow by blow account. Kinda explains why his name is Idjit and her's is Tiger.

Hey y'all, I live 5 miles from Edna in Jackson county.

Got yotes here too. I deal with them with a scoped SKS and Hornandy ballistic tips, it's like plugging 'em with a grenade. Anyway I'm praying for everyone to get rain, bye for now and God bless. * Jim a.ka J.D.

Anyone else been to the South Plains Fair? We went last night and had a blast! The birds were beautiful as usual, but the best were the call ducks

Goodness they were beautiful and as much as my husband says we don't need any more birds he now has me looking for cohin breeders and call duck breeders

I sure do love taking him to shows... It always means a new breed for me

Brenda, I wanted to go very badly, but we had gone up to Lubbock on Friday so we didn't want to drive back up their and "waste" 2 hours worth of gas.

What all did they have? I found a really good Cochin breeder that lives over there by Slayton, I think. However, I was never able to find him/her again. Where there any good Cochins there?

They had some great cochins! But I'm not to sure I would have picked the 1st place black as 1st
hmm.png
He had some really over grown and bad looking nails. They had grown so long his toes were twisted to the sides

Me and my husband were very upset because someone entered 2 molting birds and I'm sure all of the attention and stress wasn't so good for hem right now, and they had some hens that were bald in the back! Poor hings were in desperate need of chicken saddles

Some of the buff cochins looked very, very well taken care of and so did some of the others but those that weren't taken care of stuck out to me.

I'm glad I started at the chickens and ended with the ducks though. It meant I left on a happy note

And at the petting barns they had Welsh Harlequin ducklings! I was this close to taking 3 home because they were so well behaved. But I really didn't agree (as I don't every year) with leaving 4Hers under the age of 10 to take care of the handling of the chicks and ducklings. They were really rough and I'm afraid they may have killed one of the chicks by dropping it on the ground because they did not know how to hold them properly

The shows were great (especially the hypnotist) and the food was delicious!

Oh my!! That is awful!! Alot of times people will just bring birds to the show to sell them...

That poor chick! It really makes me angry see people holding chicks wrong! That is why nobody is allowed to touch my chickens..but me!

Heehee

Sounds like you had a really fun time. Wish I could have gone.

I got several looks for teaching the 4Hers how to hold them and pick them up! People looked at me like I had 2 heads and my husband smiled, shook his head and walked off, lol. I have always liked the fair, but the difference now is that I own birds and have learned so much about them in the last 2 years that I have had them, it's hard for me not to want to teach

Isn't it amazing how much you learn? I've had chickens for around 10-12 years and I can tell you, I've learned more on here in one year, then I did owning chickens for 10 years!!
