Texas

Well, if y'all want goslings and ducklings to raise next year I hope to hatch some, lol. Don't know how far y'all are from San Antonio, it may not be convenient, but who knows. Or try some from a feed store and slaughter for the table, see how y'all like the taste. Next year I'm adding more blood lines to my geese and ducks, I'll be ordering hatching eggs from a couple people on this site to improve my stock. I may even get some white super Africans! Talk about large birds, lol.
We're up outside of Dallas - close to I20 near Terrell. But you know....when you live in the country in TX, distance is kinda relative. :)

good luck o.o I find culling so hard to do
i have dug ditches, poured concrete, built up and tore down houses and barns, i have shovel dug foundations and septic tanks, i have replaced broken water pipes in the dead of winter heck i even helped to hot shoe a horse once, but i have to say killing anything whether it be for meat or for mercy is some of the hardest work i have ever done in this life and i hope it never becomes easy. Because i have lost alot of things in my life but i don't want to lose my conscience.

Everyday is snuggle my cat day. Kairi rules this house and she knows it! I also give loving to Midnight, Kiki, Kagura, and Patches whenever they want.

Lol, true. And if your like me you want to be absolutely sure any new birds are disease free. My flock will be closed for the rest of this year. And when I do add new members they will either be from a different hatchery and will be vaccinated, or from someone I trust. I don't want any diseases finding my flock through my actions. More than likely, with how rare Cayuga are in my area, it's hatchery for more of them. Goose eggs I know a few people who know bio security real well and I feel safe in ordering eggs from both of them.

We haven't culled any yet. The first to go will be unwanted roos. I can't do the killing either. We'll probably us the cone method also Hubby takes care of that. He is a hunter and is used to it (not that he likes killing, he's as soft hearted as can be concerning animals) and skilled so the animal won't suffer. Heck I can't even kill the fish i catch. But once the animal is dead..no problem. I can handle skinning or cleaning (haven't experienced plucking yet) but not squeemish. Was able to help process 3 deer this year, so I think I will be able to do chickens and still eat them.
the first time we even used this thing was very hard on everybody i still to this day can't believe the kitten survived being run over. But i had a hard time sleeping for about a week afterward. While culling chickens does bug me quite a bit but as long as i have my rubber gloves on the whole time i'm ok.

wow yeah I agree 100%

I hae been involved with animals my whole life. Had dogs and cats as a kid. Then had lots of jobs from zoo keeper to taking care of race horses to animal research. Was gonna be a vet. But when I went to work for a college up north that was doing research on dog birth control which involved euthanizing and I had gotten attached to these dogs (133 beagles) I found out I couldn't handle the death part well enough to be a vet....so i went with plants instead....LOL Anyway I can not imagine life without animals.

I worked for a year at a company who used animals. The would break the goat or pigs leg, infect it with bacteria and then try to fix, heal the animal. No matter the outcome the animals were always euthanized after. After I got pick pocketed by a friendly goat, I couldn't go back. It made me sick to do that to those poor animals. I also took a class where we injected mice with different things, then gassed the mice and ran cultures and other tests on different body systems to study immunology. While I appreciate the knowledge gained, I couldn't do that for a living.

I have always believed in an old saying, "if you kill an animal, it Deserves to be eaten".
The only other time I justify killing in in defense of my family, and this includes my animals.
