Texas

Hmmm....hadn't thought of that.  It might help.  She keeps rubbing her face on her shoulder so she gets junk on her feathers.  She's not sneezong or wheezing so I let her out of her quarantine cage for a while yesterday.  Probably not a good idea if she does have mycoplasma.  But I felt so bad for her.  She wanted out so much and she hasn't seen the sun or been able to bathe for a week.  She stayed mostly to herself and got some fresh air and sunshine and got to share some of the watermelon.  I put her back in the cage for the night so she wouldn't be in close contact at roosting time.

I see more cuckoo marans in the future.  IDK if I just got lucky or it's the breed but they are the sweetest birds.  so calm and friendly not fearful from day one.  I'll see what kind of layer she is (assuming she gets well).  Pretty sure the other one is a roo.  Sure was hoping they were both hens....luck of the pick.

If you try the visine, make sure it's non-medicated. Some human medicines can cause reactions in animals, and our dosage is higher than a chickens even for medicines we can share.

True enough...I use people meds (Amoxicillin) with my cats. Have learned over the years breaking down dosage for use in other than people. When i got the tetreacyline for the maran. It was some math to break it down finally just did a best guess for how much to put in her cup. It is set up to treat a bunch of large animals. So going from 50 gallons to 4 ounces was a challenge.

I bet. Good luck!

Thank you! My experience....heck, I'm still a newbie that is learning new stuff every day. And my experience sometimes comes from screwing up the first time or two :) Just when I think I have everything figured out for a certain chicken situation...something changes and I gotta figure out something new to do.

OK...for all you cat people out there... DH just informed me that today is "International Hug Your Cat Day" so everyone hug your cats today and if you don't have cats maybe you can hug someone elses cat that needs a hug.

We're up outside of Dallas - close to I20 near Terrell. But you know....when you live in the country in TX, distance is kinda relative. :)

My new marans: super cute and so chickeny. They are only 5-6 weeks old (if that) and they have been outside since I got them home (Sunday)
I have a guinea pig cage with chicken wire around it to make a pretty big run for 5 weekers and this separates them from the big girls. No heat at night. Everyone is doing gone. This is the way to go. Totally
I'm so happy it worked out. They are just too cute!

"By Our Powers Combined!" (I'm an 80s baby so it made me think of Captain Planet lol) My system is going well. It's based off of "shelfponics" which is small scale and simplified, and I use it for herbs and salad greens. I use Bluegill that I caught in a minnow trap when they were spawning earlier in the year. Currently, they are in an aqarium but will be moving to a larger tank soon because they are growing fast. I started with about 15-16 (remember I start small) but had a few losses in the beginning. There's probably 9 or 10 now. Eventually I'd like to build a large system w? tilapia but didnt want to make the investment just yet. Easier/Free to just trap local fish when they are fry. lol
I thought of Captain Planet too...lol

@bnjrob You're not too far! Do you sell Java chicks? It wouldn't be until next Spring, so I was wondering if you plan on continuing with the breed?
I like to get new breeds each time so I can figure out which breeds I like best.

I am only a year older than you two!

Trying to catch up, I was 700 post behind, not sure how that is possible! So I had to skip a few.

I am very sorry for the Chicken, chick, cat and dog losses

That is always hard to do even when you know it if for the best.

Welcome to all the new Texan Chicken people!

Someone asked about Bieldelders, here is a thread on them

Chookschicks also has some project birds call Konza Prairie Rangers, seems pretty cool!

I started back on feeding fermented feed. I find it pretty easy, but I don't have the number of birds a lot of you do. I just use those 5 gallon homer buckets from Home Depot and keep 2 going at all times. Seems to help with water consumption in the summer. Here is a great thread on FF.
