I really thought this hatching thing would be easier than what it is...

I might talk to my husband and see if he can use the parts from this incubator to build something that might be more reliable. I don't notice anything obviously wrong with the incubator, it seems to hold the temp. It might be our climate but I know people have to be able to hatch in this climate. The first hatch I figured it was me, the second hatch I thought we had it figured out and this hatch just has me frustrated. I don't think I can justify buying an extremely expensive incubator since I'm doing it 'just for fun' but trust me, this is not fun. I guess I need to break down and start making road trips to breeders that have what I want and pick up chicks.

yeah cause the main thing i noticed with my old set up the darn thing kept over heating and the humidity wouldn't stay put. So after the first failed hatch i let it run for 2 weeks straight with a high\low temp and humidity meter. Everyday i added holes to the side of the Styrofoam and more water to the bottom water chamber (Tupperware) every 3 hours until the temp and humidity was in the range i wanted it was a pain in the neck (and back) but i now have ducklings to show for it. i would suggest to if you are going to start another clutch start with home egg's first and make sure it works before buying more egg's because i now how expensive and devastating it can be to spend all that money on hatching egg's to get nothing.

Pearl, my only laying girl, is pretty quiet except for her "I did it!" song that she sings LOUDLY right afterwards.
But Freya and Eloise...noisey girls lately. I'm hoping I'll see a tan egg soon!

By the way, anyone know why the ears change colors?
My Barred rock will be bright red during the day, then her ears fade to a yellowy orange, kind of splotchy, in the evening.
She doesn't have any symptoms and she's not acting different

my grams sick rooster does something like that when ever he goes into the sun his comb turns bright red but when he goes back inside his little house the back half of it turns blue again and he was born with a red comb believe me i was there

I have to ask this one. I have a silkie hen that when she is standing around she has her head down under her chest. She looks like she is looking for something under her but there is not anything there. She does raise her head up when she is walking around and when she stops her head goes right back down under her. Does anyone have a clue as to why she would be doing this ?

i would get some good glasses and a strong flashlight and check her legs for mites, worms or pealing skin one of my grams did this once when she jumped the fence and got into the next door neighbors yard and it turns out she got a type of worm on her leg skin close to her stomach
