Texas

Lol, that's funny! Sounds like my husband and yet it makes no sense whatsoever.

No, it makes no sense! But then I don't either. I can easily cut open a body to remove infection, i can give injections, and am not grossed out by blood and pus. In lab we used live mice for tests all the time, then killed them and harvested the blood or organs we needed. But they were killed by gas chamber, we, the lab techs didnt do that part. But I have a very hard time killing my table chickens, I usually make my hubby do it. Once it has been bled out, I easily get back in there and de-feather, gut and clean the carcass. But making the actual kill is so hard. And my hubby is the opposite, he can make the kill easily, but doctoring? No way! I find it hilarious. He is OK at cleaning and gutting the carcass, he just don't know how to do it right yet, lol.

Where were u that you saw them?
On here....

There's a breeder in Houston, (She does Golden Cuckoos AND Salmon Faverolles) but she only has hatching eggs right now.
I am NOT buying an incubator, I am NOT buying an incubator
I'm going to snoop around on the faverolle page and try and find some.

Is Summer over yet?! Seriously, it's to early to start this craziness!

Yikes! I'm sorry!
It's cool and rainy in McKinney today....

I haven't washed them before putting the mineral oil on unless they were dirty and then I tried more to scrape off the dirt rather than washing the whole egg. Some were just so filthy that they just got washed and used rather than even try to store them. Hate it when they try to play hockey with their eggs and make them so filthy.
Thanks!

Are your Javas all black or mottled?
Doesn't make a difference, just curious

I found a Hava Bator brand new on EBay for $48 plus shipping. So I got it. Lol. I can only imagine the kind of trouble I am going to get into hatching eggs after it arrives. But I do need to learn to use it properly before my all important goose and duck eggs get here next Feb. looks like a lot of chicken will be on the menu this year, :gig

Thanks!
I don't see them lasting long here either.
I've got an 18 month old son that eats more like an 18 year old....lol
He'll eat 2-3 on his own for breakfast!
Plus I like to bake when I have the time.
It's just awkward right now with only 1 layer lol
What do you do with ONE little pullet egg? lol
She laid Sat, Sun, and Monday. Then took a break yesterday: got in the box but didn't lay.
Haven't checked today yet

We still have store-bought eggs, from before our one pullet started laying. Once they get in full swing, we won't need to buy eggs anymore. But I know what you mean...right now we have 3 little pullet eggs...might scramble them up for my 4yr-old, since she's so excited to eat 'em.

We have a 5 ft corn snake as a "pet" but it's in a big tank .so snakes done really scare me and I'm always watchful in the wild, but I have to admit the adrenaline was flowing while we were looking for it!

I couldn't have a pet snake either. I used to work with animals (boarding kennels and pet stores) and I once tried to handle a snake for a customer to see & it knew I was scared and tried to strike. I nearly peed myself and asked someone else to help the customer with their snake purchase. LOL

Just wipe it all over the egg - it provides a better barrier to air than the bloom alone. Could use plant or animal based oils also - years ago they dipped eggs in melted lard for storage - but plant and animal oils tend to go rancid so the recommendation is for mineral oil.

Good to know. Thanks for the advice!

I'm designing my coop and I keep changing my mind! Why is this so hard to just go with a design? I also put in my order and they will be here at the end of July. I'm super excited but I want to start working on my co-op and run ASAP. Think I can talk the hubby into buying a table saw? I've been wanting one for years... he got an air compressor last year so it's only fair, right? I get excited about power tools... strange I know. I love all the pics of chicks and ducks! What do y'all do with your ducks? Are they used for eggs or meat or just pets?

We briefly had ducks, and we enjoyed their eggs. As with our chickens, once the eggs stop, they will probably retire a bit before becoming dinner. We don't have ducks anymore, but our chickens are just coming of age & soon we'll be back in yard-fresh eggs again! WooHoo!

I know your right, but I'm a worry wart. I just had to perform my first bumble foot surgery yesterday on poor Screwball. That poor boy, first he is the only chicken to have mites and their eggs, now bumble foot. I caught it early, there was a very small kernel in his foot, I think I got it all out. Now I am just monitoring him and changing his bandage, hoping it heals well. But now I have worries about Ivory getting egg bound, or something being wrong with her and that's why she isn't laying yet. Like I said, I am a worry wart with my animals.

My flock is definately giving me a through education in poultry doctoring, lol. My husband had to help me with Screwball (he bites now) , and he told me he would never be able to cut out bumble foot. I laughed, bug strong man can cut a chickens throat for dinner but can't remove infection. Typical isn't it?

I dunno. My husband probably wouldn't have a problem with removing infection from an animal...that's how we got our cat. Puss-Puss was wandering the neighborhood, picked our house to visit & my husband nursed him back to health after a nasty head wound from a cat fight. It was infected, oozing, etc...and my husband cleaned and cared for it immediately. He's a good pet doc.

I am not a chicken expert so my guess could be off as well. But your chickens were definately older than mine. At that time mine didn't have that look yours did, and I know my chickens exact age. So yours are definately older, and I guess a month because that's how long it took for my chickens to start looking like yours with small pink combs, legs that were starting to yellow up, adult feathers, and they didn't have that baby look anymore. At 18 weeks my chickens are getting that fat look of hens, not the skinny look of pullets anymore.

The Ladies did already have little combs and adult feathers by the time I got them. And with a third chicken, Goldie (Easter Egger), squatting for me last night, I think your guess is much closer than mine. They have all been fattening up, too.
