Lost my best girl today
hit.gif
she was like a dog, followed me around, clucked with delight when I came out to the coop, and if I sat down would run and jump into my lap to be held. She was a blue silkie hen a little over 1 year old named Scarlett, my best chicken in over 8 years of raising chickens, I balled and am balling my eyes out just thinking of her. I found her under the coop(the coop is on little legs) all sprawled out with no obvious signs like blood, feather loss, foam at the mouth, or any sign of injury; which makes this harder not knowing what happened to her, if she was in pain, or if I was at fault

. any ideas of what happened to my baby girl?

I am so sorry you lost your sweetheart. I wish I could help with the mystery. I seriously doubt after a year of caring for her and loving her that it had to do with anything you did.

My heart goes out to you. I'm so sorry.. :(

Oh no so sorry to hear that! She was such a beautiful girl.

So sorry you lost your baby girl....she was a beautiful chicken. Try not to blame yourself...she was healthy and you obviously took good care of her. But you are so right that not knowing is the hardest part. Glad you are trying to look ahead to better times and good luck with your duckies.

Welcome to all the new peeper keepers!
Been crazy busy here getting ready for winter. Harvested last of the second crop of field peas and got them canned. Put in a new wood stove for heat this winter and will be getting lots more cabinet and counter space where the old fireplace was...yeah! Going to build a barrel heater for the chicken house. Electric bills were off the chart last year because of electric heaters in our house and heat lamps in the coop. No chicks this winter!

Our flock of 41 birds is doing well. Have some new layers on board and egg production is up some now that it is cooler. Getting some nice white eggs now...a bit small compared to the RIR eggs...but still nice. Very pleased with the spring additions as they are growing up very nicely. Still waiting to see how the last three we got turn out. The "Littles"...Speckles, Milly and Ruby, were three pullets we bought a couple months ago. They were suppose to be full size birds but I think the roo daddy had some bantam in him. The hen is an Aussie so she is big but the three we have are on the small side...time will tell.

On the down side we have at least 8 roos. We have a chorus of crowing in the morning! Even the last survivor of the attack turned out to be a Chucky instead of a Chickie!...and one of my Aussies and one of my SLW are roos. The hard part is deciding which stay and which go. Poor Abraham is loosing weight trying to keep the "boys" in line and off his ladies. Will keep Abraham and Issac the brown leghorn roo...he's DH's pride and joy, he is so pretty. Will probably keep the SLW roo as we have 3 hens and would like to breed them in the spring. that will mean another pen and coop to keep them separate, but thats do-able. The mutt birds will all go to freezer camp the end of October too bad as they are handsome birds. That leaves the Aussie and the white leghorn, Dexter. Might try to rehome them or keep the Aussies as a pair and see how it goes with 3 roos in one yard. Just getting rid of half the roos will bring some peace...my poor hens are getting tore up with all the "attention" they get!

Was able to rehome our corn snake to a nice lady at the pet shop so with his habitat gone have more room for another food storage cabinet.

Our cousin (his house is about 150 ft from our chicken house) killed a huge 5ft rattle snake, 16 buttons, as big around as my arm. It was in his front yard threatening his little dog! He sure hated to kill it as they are protected and all but too dangerous to fool with. Only the second rattler we've seen in 14 years of being here. Could have been bad as we go out at night to check on the chickens and do a general property check.

Prayers for those who have had to deal with adversity and loss...may things be better. Hope everyone made it thru the heat and this finds folks happier and doing well.
Take care! Magpie

Hey magpie! Were getting a wood stove insert this week excited to start hearing our house this way! My electric bills were crazy high to so I did some research and got solar panels on our home. We love them! Er went through a company called solar city. I just got my first chicks about 2 weeks ago. Only 4 because we live in the city with a medium size back yard. I'm hoping to teach my self how to start canning soon. ! Nice to meet you.

Awesome! We've alway had a regular fireplace in the center of our (900sq ft) house, but it was 20 yrs old and in bad shape. So we moved it to the livingroom and got a free standing one...My computer is dragging....will BBL with a pic. Nice to meet you as well

You are not far from me at all. I'm in old Parker, off McCreary. You will love this site. Lots of kind people here! P.S. If you hit the quote button, it flags the person that you quote and lets them know there is a reply. It's helpful when there are three or four different conversations going on at once. What kind of chickens do you have?

Are your solar panels ones you put on yourself or does the company have to install them?
