The babies made the transition to their new brooding pen in the workshop. I think we need to put some chicken wire across the top. It won't be long before they will be able to fly out.

Ha. The chicks do seem happier without those witchy RIR's beating them up every day, but boy, it's crowded in the small coop. It's 6X6, so basically should be big enough for 9 chickens. It is currently housing 1 rooster (Mr. Feathers) and 27 11 week old peeps. I figure I'll give them a month to 6 weeks, then swap around again so that there's only 9 in this coop and the rest will be in the big one. Mr. Feathers is an awesome rooster. He's so good with the little ones. Unfortunately, he's not so good with his son, Conan, who whopped his butt a while back and he spent all his time hiding instead of watching over the hens. I'll probably keep him over in the smaller coop.

How small of small numbers? I'm not professional but I have butchered for personal use. I don't mind showing you how if you want to learn. It's been a couple of years since I had one to butcher because we were over the road trucker drivers but I'm home all the time now.

We only have 2 broilers that I believe to be Cornish X, they are 4.5 wks now and huge compared to the other chicks. From what I have read they should be slaughtered at around 8 wks or they start developing a lot of health issues. May have a few extra roosters that will need to be culled since I went straight run this time around, but they are no where near the size of the broilers. So probably need to wait on those, or caponize them. Which since I believe one of the broilers is a male that would allow us to learn the anatomy on one that is already dead or about to be.

I am all loaded up and ready to go!! I will be in a 2006 Chevy Z-71 pulling a pretty run down trailer with a chicken run on it. Who's a comin' to Conroe trading day tomorrow?!?!?
