Well we did it! Made the trip to Cameron Tx yesterday. 4 hours and 256 miles to pick up 6 chicks. But it was worth it. If we get chicks from Ideal again we will be picking them up. That gives us 26 chicks plus 6 Cochins that are nearly 2 months old. We still have most of the original flock too. I see us building another pen and coop pretty soon. Who would have thought that chickens were an invasive specie!!!


There they are...5 golden lace wyndotts and one little Aussie.
I have to laugh...it was just a few months ago that I really had to talk DH into driving just 50 miles to get my Aussies!

Thanks. I have been reading some on the genetics for getting the different colored eggs. Find it fascinating. I have 3 EEs, two lay blue-green and one lays a cream color. From what I under stand you have a chance of getting pink if you breed with a rooster from a pink layer. I think I could produce olive eggers from the two blue-green crossed to one of the roos I have from a brown laying breed. Need to do more research though.

Magpiesing - I made the choice to pick-up also, quite happy I did. It meant I had full control over their travel conditions the whole time. The local feed store also ordered from the same hatch date and had them shipped. I decided I wanted some of the keets they were going to be getting in, so I was there when they were unpacking the next day. There were a few DOA in the batches of chicks they received. So long as Ideal has the breeds I want in the future I will order through them and pick-up.

Stellekitten - Cute chicks. Sorry you were unable to get the number of chicks you wanted. I got lucky with our local feed store. They had 2 people put in orders for the keets one for 6 and the other was marked down for 10 on one slip and 20 on another. They had 30 keets come in, so they called the one with the discrepancy and asked if they would be ok with less than 20, so I was able to get the 8 I wanted. If you are up to more chicks when you are able to drive again I highly recommend ordering from Ideal and picking them up. Another option are the ones that ship small orders using heat packs instead of adding male chicks.

I got an order from Ideal last week. We ordered 15 chicks (various breeds) and they sent a spare roo too. They all arrived fine, but one (a roo) died over the weekend at about day 3. No clear reason.

We also got 30 guinea fowl from them 3 months ago which all did well. One died at 5 weeks, but it never thrived. At 5 weeks it wasn't much bigger than the day we got it.

I'd say the statistics for our first two orders were pretty darn good.

I'd recommend Ideal and have no problem with their shipping and I live about 2 hours away from them.

Hi all. I live in Buda. Many chickens of different breeds; Buff Orpington, Sliver Laced Wyandotte, Ameraucana, Black Australope, Red Sex Link, Light Brahma, Silkie, Booted Bantam, several mix breeds all above listed with SLW roo. I'd love my booted bantam to breed but "King" the SLW won't have it. I guess he feels he has the ladies covered. There's "Honkers" a Red Broiler pullet. She is so sweet and friendly "aka: hungry", I just couldn't butcher her, when the day came.

I wanted to send out a shout out to a fellow BYCer, Lisa Taylor from Taylor Hobby Farms. All 23 of the chicks (including the extra) survived the trip (no thanks to USPS), and are doing well. They are tearing up the feed in the big brooder box, and are smart little buggers, they have figured out the brooder cap nipples and are just clicking away, running from one to another like they are playing basketball. I have 8 brooder caps in there of 20 oz former soda bottles and they are pecking way. Also, since the Americauana stock was low she very graciously substituted with Chocolate Orpingtons. When the children come home from school they will lose their minds over all the little peeping baby chicks.

Glad to hear/read you finally got your chicks!! Happy they were all healthy and breathing, knowing the USPS as I do.
