I hate being without power. Our pole has been hit 3 times now. I think I am going to ask the power company to shorten my pole.
They got the power back on by 9am. Thank goodness we have a gas water heater and stove so we were able to get everything done. The sun was amazing today! That is crazy about your pole being hit all the time.

It always baffles me when a baby chick dies. When I first got my Easter Egger chicks, I got 7 and one died. I had 24 baby chicks, all thriving strong, clean food every day, (medicated chick feed with chick grit), was Mericks vaccinated, water with brooder caps galore, and I lost one of the 14 Black Copper Maran chicks today. It plopped down and couldn't get up on its own. I pulled it out, barely conscious and lip, isolated it a box and it finally breathed its last. With ideal conditions, it always seems one chick dies in a group no matter where it comes from, how it is vaccinated, medicated, or well cared for.

I have bred dogs before...we have something called fading puppy syndrome....they just don't feed until they can't feed...vicious cycle. Chicks do the same exact thing...or they are bullied and aren't allowed to eat sometimes...if you take them and make a concoction in their water...bvitamin, ( Walgreens) nutradrench, vet rx and a bit of sugar...Shake it well get it in a dropper for really sick ones...as much as you can drip in...they almost always get stronger if you aren't to late....then adapt it into a waterer for several days....I like to let them run out for a while so they are really thirsty and will readily drink it up when offered....I just pulled two three week olds....with droopy wings and puffed up... Gave them this therapy ...under a brinsea warmer they are great and ready to go back to mom. After about three days.:D

My rooster is broody.

Let me tell you, he was giving his girls a good talking to the whole time he was sitting on those eggs.
He went to each nesting box (4 total) and sat on each egg, "lecturing" the hens the whole time!!
LOL

How sweet! I hope my future roo acts like this.

How tall is your pole? Seems like it is attracting lightening. Hopefully they can shorten it a little and hope it helps.

Are yours outside already?
I have some 7 week olds I haven't put outside yet.
I've had mine out since I got them at 4 days old. They are 6 wks old today. I've never brooded in the house and hope I never have too.

We have a lot of rain on the way again. It should be here about the time I was planning on heading to the vet with Blue to get her shots. I hate driving in the rain. If I wait till after, then she will probably be wet, lol.

These were a male order, no mom. My EE's from a hatchery, my 24 chicks from a hobby farm. It is hard to catch at first, as baby chicks flop wherever they want when they decide to sleep. But, a little knowledge goes a long way. I will remember that for the future. I was actually surprised with this many I hadn't had a fatality yet. If it had to happen, I am kind of glad it was a French Black Copper Maran as they are the majority of the group.
