Texas

Good morning to folks in Texas! How are you this fine Thursday morning?

I hail from north Alabama but I have a co-worker whose daughter lives in Texas, the west Houston area. He has been buying my eggs for her but she only gets them when either he and his wife go there to visit or when she comes home for a visit, which she did this week. I told him I had good connections through this website and could probably find someone in her area or nearby who could sell her farm fresh eggs that are (almost) as good as mine! :) Just kidding! I know everyone's eggs on this forum are good and I have no problem recommending she buy from someone on here.

Is there anyone on this Texas thread who might be able to begin supplying this young lady with eggs? With it being so hot here, my girls not laying very many , and the demands of my regular customers, I was only able to get her four dozen to take back home with her. If you or someone you know can provide eggs, please let me know so I can get her contact information and get buyer and seller together.

Thanks so much and have a great day!!!
I am 70 miles North of Houston in Livingston. I only have 8 layers at the moment. I have 42 birds, all in various states of maturity (however that number includes roosters), but by this fall, I expect my layers should be starting off. Then, I will have more eggs than I will know what to do with. Some, I will probably keep back when I want to breed some of the birds I have (Black Copper Marans, Chocolate Orpingtons, I am going to take some of the pure Americaunas and make Olive Eggers too). The Buff Orpingtons, the Barred Rocks, and the newer Easter Egger hens will be for layers.

Well good news, bad news. Found another poult wobbly this evening when putting them up. He felt incredibly warm, but not much more so than the others. The waterers inside the coop were nearly full, so I know they weren't going back in there to drink today. I did see some of them drinking from the pool and tank in the run, so I know they had access to water. Plus at least half of the run is in the shade all the time. I am fairly certain that the most recent poult was the same one that a Holland cockerel tried to stomp and crush yesterday evening. I have them banded, but the orange and pink beads look similar in low light.

Looks like I get to either swap the cockerels and pullets out, so the pullets are in with the poults, or build another coop. I think the cockerels think the snood nub is a worm and go after it. Don't know if the pullets will be any better but at least they are slightly smaller.

So the injured poults are back on a higher protein feed, and I will mix an electrolyte solution for them.

Another thing that dawned on me is that I started to add the Backyard Chickens Health Pack to their water Saturday evening, and it was Sunday that the one started going downhill again. Could explain them going for the water in the run instead of in the coop, although they drank more of it on Tuesday when they were out. So they may both just be extremely dehydrated. I know the one in sickbay was drinking some, but he could have just been playing with the nipple and making a mess since the shavings under it have been fairly damp.

My hens prefer the large flake shavings over hay. The prefer the ground over small flake shavings. I ran out of the large ones last year and had to buy the small ones. They pack down a lot, and I had a couple of my hens go to laying on the floor in protest. Luckily, they went back to nest laying once I was able to get some more large flake shavings. I think I've created monsters!

What does everyone feed their chickens? Do you buy a commercial mix or do you mix your own? I've been feeding Texas Naturals, but I'm thinking about changing. I've gotten several eggs that taste like fish over the last few months. Fishmeal is in the TN mix, so I'm assuming that the hen got into a heavy concentrated area of fishmeal. It's not something I enjoy eating for breakfast. Fish eggs.

My hens prefer hay. I've done shavings before, but they avoided that box until I added hay. If the hay gets all compressed and doesn't make a nice nest, they'll start avoiding the box until I put some fresh in. I have horses, so it's an easy thing to grab a couple of handfuls off the ground in the hay barn for the hens.

I feed fermented - a mix of oats, barley, scratch, BOSS and catfish food. I've had it going for about 2 years now and they still love it. Got in late to the feed store last week and accidentally bought a bag of Texas Naturals layer pellets (needed a flock raiser/grower bag) and gave that to the hens. I figured since it was new, they'd devour it, but when I came home from work, most of it was still in the troughs.

I live in Cypress- NW corner of Houston. I sell most of my eggs to a local store, but we usually keep a few dozen on the side to sell to people. It's $4 a dozen.

Dumor feeds - I tried that with my chicks once. The poop stench was almost unbearable!! Switched to Purina and it was fine again. Kinda weird since Dumor is actually made by Purina for TSC. Makes you wonder what the difference is in the feeds.

Incuview run #2 July 18 2015

27 Total Eggs

I will place the eggs in the Incubator at 12:00 Texas Time and candle in one week for fertility. I will update all along the incubation and try and keep you guys informed. The last batch of chicks were just moved to a little 4x4 brooding house out of the living room and all are doing well, I will try and post pictures later. If you have any questions along the way feel free to ask. ET

Incuview Update July 24, 2015

Candled eggs today and none of the jumbo guinea eggs showed any development. I broke them open and showed no sign of development at all. I attribute this to the 100 plus degrees that we have had and the fact that I took them from a nest out it the open. On the good side all of the chickens eggs show development so we will continue with them all towards the hatch date. I think the little incuview is doing great the guinea eggs were just not fertile. If you have any questions feel free to ask or comment. ET

I have a group of 5 week old chicks, supposed to be 6 Delawares and 6 New Hampshire pullets and 1 New Hampshire cockerel. I'm getting a suspicion that one of the Delaware pullets is a cockerel. Anyone here have experience with the breed? These are my first Delawares,so I'm not completely sure. The NH cockerel is glaringly obvious already.

and the NH boy. He's quite a character. My nephew wants to name him Al Capone!

Other than my Americanas I know who is a rooster and who isn't. The Copper Marans and Chocolate Orpingtons are obvious. I will have to wait to see who is for the Americanas. I would like to at least get one hen out of it, so it I can make Olive Eggers.

That Delaware looks rooster like to me....

For those of you that remember, I've been on the hunt for a German Shepherd Dog for the last two or so years. A replacement to my chance, first picture, who passed at a tender old age.

I finally found my new buddy. Meet Karma. ( second picture )
