I most likely won't be trying the Hugelland. I don't like that they don't put the actual ingredients on the label, at least not the one posted online. Leaning towards H & H, but more expensive for 40# instead of 50#. Still doing research to formulate my own feed. Freezing smaller portions is a good idea for small flock owners, besides keeping the weevil population down it also will keep the oils in the feed from going rancid. Both H & H and Hugelland come in smaller bags. There are several substances that can affect the absorption of calcium. High temps can even weaken shells, if the hen is panting a lot to cool down it can affect the use of blood calcium for the shell.

For those that asked to be kept updated on the poults:

Since adding the alfalfa to their diet they have greatly improved. Appears to have just been injuries coupled with vitamin e deficiency. Had another poult that was in sickbay before those two went in, had a stepped on foot. He's been all healed for awhile, but he has not developed any of the symptoms the other 2 have/had. Will give it a few more days, then start transitioning him out with the rest of the poults. The first one that went wobbly is taking a bit longer to recuperate, but I think he still has a chance at a full recovery. He's still a bit weak.

The little Cubalaya pullet is also healing nicely since adding the alfalfa, much better clotting now. Confirming the vitamin k deficiency.

I've tried to post this three times!!!

Due to vigilance, we found a snake in the wall of one of the coops. Changed and went to check on the birds. Found a hen stuck in the wall. Went to pull her out and grabbed a snake! He got several eggs and two chicks. He's dead now. Fifth one this year that we've found.

I considered it. I hear they make good meat? Thats what most people raise them for, right? I had a hard time getting my family to eat the extra roo's though, so I'm not sure they would eat the quail either:/

There is only one reason I don't eat quail....it's TOO expensive to buy!!!! Comparing quail to chicken is like comparing caviar to potato chips....(Especially when prepared correctly) ...the only reason more people dont like quail is the small size....and the work to get the small amount of meat off the small bones....

Now, if a quail grew to the size of an ostrich, the beef industry would be in serious trouble, and instead of stuffing them....we'd be telling turkeys to get stuffed on Thanksgiving.....(well....maybe not...but....it is awesome) ....
