Sadly we wernt able to get any infection out, so we'd have to take her in. We already parting with our beloved horses, parting with 4/5 of my rats, ect. Just getting a little over whelmed.
If I may ask a personal question: how do you view poultry? I view mine as food, or a source of potential income. My laying hens, either lay eggs or become food. My roosters either service the hens and produce, or become food (Except for Lucky, as I am a man of my word, and he will eventually just die of old age. An agreement I made, and intend to keep. And he is an awesome rooster, tame, and fertile). I tend to take a pragmatic view to animals. It may be time to let the hen go, or, well, eat her. At least she provided food for your family. There is a hierarchy I go by: God, family, and then the animals. I do spend a lot of hours every week caring for the animals. That being said, I also refuse to let an animal suffer unnecessarily. I had to put down a wonderful old GSD once, because she had cancer. She was a wonderful dog, but I wasn't about to let her suffer with cancer. So, I let her fade, and petted her as she died. She never realized she was dying. She just thought she got tired. Just some food for thought.

Yup, most deff let them go if need be, but rather give her a fighting chance though. I hatched her from an egg. As well as her sisters. My birds are just for eggs, breeding and spoiled pets. I honestly could never eat my birds. I have had to cull before, but won't unless I absolutely have to.. She's a great bird, Still gives eggs too. She wouldn't be good to eat for a while anyway, due to antibiotics.

We live in NW Arlington and are in the process of designing our coop! It's very exciting!

Isn't it? We've started with a pre-fab coop which has served us well this summer (we only have 4 hens) but it is too flimsy for our Panhandle winters. We're looking at plans now to build a new coop this fall. I'm excited - our girls have just started laying this last week and it is like Christmas every day. :p

Interested to hear what type of coop/features you're planning.

I'm also upgrading from my little prefab coop (it's a little tight in there for my three girls, and I have friends coming to join them in the fall). I'm building from The Garden Coop plans - pretty straightforward, but I'm pretty sore from spending the weekend sanding, cutting, and sealing all the lumber.... Hope to have it built in the next week or two.

The sad part is the industrial meat birds are full of antibiotics.

I feel you. I put down the foundation of an 8x8 breeding coop with 10 foot 4x8 treated wood that is put in the ground 3 feet and 4 feet respectively to create a slopped roof. I thought I got into a boxing match with a bear by the time I was done on Sunday. A lot more to do though. The posts are in, the bottom 2x6x8's are in. Now for a header, support 2x6's every four feet so I have something for the barn siding to connect to. 2x4's for the roof (hurricane ties, I don't have all the cool toys to make bird's mouths, then roofing, then a door, some windows, yes, it will take awhile. Hopefully, before my Chocolate/mottled orpingtons outgrow their brooder box.

Hey there. I am doing good.
I wish I could take the pair of dogs. I really want a GSD puppy. But I have no business getting a dog much less two. I hope you find them a good home.

Glad you're okay. I hadn't seen you, maybe I just skimmed over your posts. Eek!

I'm sorry but it sounds to me like you're trying to justify letting the hen suffer. Personally I'd let her go. Not shove her off on someone else. Put her down at home where she was raised.

I guess we each have our opinion. Have a good day!

I am doing the happy dance. One of my 21 week old cream legbar pullets just laid her first egg.
The 2 Brown eggs are ceramic ones I placed in the nesting box to show them where to lay.
