Texas

Hello, long time lurker, first time poster (<---lame! ). My wife and I are new to the whole chicken scene and have four girls that are 2 weeks old. We're in Austin and I'm hoping to connect with someone to see if I can get some meal worms or even black soldier flies so we can raise some delicious treats for our ladies. I'm more than happy to buy them too, of course.

Welp, just wanted to introduce myself and say "hey". Hey!
If you have a Tractor Supply in your area they sell various sizes of freeze dried meal worms. However, at 2 weeks, unless you are going completely organic, I have mine medicated chick feed with chick grit.

Welcome I'm in Round Rock. I feed mine live meal worms from the pet store but not till they are older. Actually I haven't really given my chickens much but did do lots of bugs and fish for my ducks. I let my kids dig in the yard for earth worms after it rains.

Thanks for the info! I don't intend on giving the meal worms to them yet, I'm just trying to plan ahead. I'm really trying to start reproducing them too but if I ever get in a bind for whatever reason, I'll keep Tractor Supply in mind, thanks!

I had no idea the pet store sold meal worms, I'll have to give that a shot. I plan on having a vermicompost soon too so worms will be on the menu as well. Thank you for the pet store info!

Welcome to BYC. It has been several years since I lived in Austin but I used to get all the stuff I needed for all my birds at Tomlinsons off of Airport Blvd.

Hello and welcome. As some others have already suggested you can get the dried mealworms at some feed stores and some stores that sell wild bird seed. If you go to the pet store as suggested they sometimes have them out in a refrigerator in the reptile section and sometimes you have to ask for them. The pet stores do have something called a Superworm on the shelves, from my understanding they are mealworms that have been treated with a hormone so that they don't pupate and thus grow larger. Your choice on whether you want to feed those or not. From what I have seen Petco stores usually have the little refrigerator in the reptile aisle, while you generally have to ask for them at Petsmart stores.

I am also considering starting to raise them, but have not made up my mind yet. One of the BYC sponsors does have the mealworms and black soldier fly larvae, along with food for them: Rainbow Mealworms. I know I had run across another site that sold starter kits for mealworms, but I would have to hunt for the link again.

I wanted to show off how big the furbabies are. =) They grow so fast! Only two girls left to go out of the litter of eight, and sadly only because I held them for someone that did not show up and they lost their chance with other people. We decided to keep one of the boys. I couldn't help it. So from right to left: Iris, Mark, and Rose.
