Texas

I would like to see a get together but Huntsville is a bit of a stretch for me too. Guess that happens when you're in the biggest state in the lower 48.

Surprisingly, there's not a lot of people in the Huntsville area that raise poultry. At least, that I'm talking to. Mainly cattle raisers. The few poultry people I know that I've talked to wouldn't be able to/ would want to attend something like that. I don't know why.

What about you Houston people? I'm have family that way, if something were put together down there I'd like to attend... This state is just too big! lol

Anyone else flooded out? I've got pictures to upload, but the creeks were dangerously close to the bridges... One was brushing underneath one of the bridges down my little dirt road. Lots of wash outs, lots of new ruts down my road too.

I'd go to Hunstville. I'm 10 miles north of Livingston, so Hunstville only about 45 minutes (or quicker depending on my mood :) Went to the Fancy Feathers show Saturday. It was freakin AWESOME!! It was about a 4 hour drive, but so worth it!! I talked to one of the ladies, Amy, who was "in charge" (or at least helping take care of everything) and she said they had over 500 entries this year. I bought 5 juvenile Marans (BCM and Blue), 3 BCM chicks (3 weeks old), 2 Aracaunas (2 weeks old), 3 barred rock chicks (3 wks old) - these are all show quality. I also bought a few others just for fun. We also stopped at the TSC that was on the other side of 46 and bought 8 golden phoenix chicks and 4 various pullet chicks. I also acquired 8 Maran eggs from the show. I put 3 under a broody hen and gave 4 to a friend to put in his incubator!! If y'all have never been to a show - ya gotta go!

Another great part of the trip for me was I didn't have to take my kids (9 and 5) with me!!! It's was awesome not to have to stop the car and threaten them with their lives! In fact the two friends that made the trip with me fell asleep, so I drove all the way to New Braunsfels without stopping!!!

It stormed at my place yesterday. I discovered my roof isn't leaking (which is what I thought the problem was so I had tried tarring it last weekend - which, of course, didn't go as planned). Nope. It's the fact that I built my coop downstream of the river that crops up during floods. Yep, the river (I'm gonna call it the Chunky Dunk River) flows right inside the door and creates a pond inside my coop. I am now trying to figure out what to use and how to use it to change the direction of the rapids . . . luckily the "older" part of my coop stayed very dry and the moms kept the chicks in that part or else I would have been trying to figure out how to make little boats for them.

Does anyone know how much rain we got? It had to be at least 4.

Thank you Henry... I have some more work to do on the inside. I cut some pine trees on my place and hauled them to the saw mill and majority of it, I built out of the rough cut lumber.

I'm in Lockhart. We are in the process of completing our coop and soon get some chickens no chicks for us we don't have anywhere to set up a brooder. Anyone know where we could get some nice variety of laying hens? My son wants to get some different colors.

Vickir73 - I wanted to go SOOO bad. But I got called in to work. I generally work Saturdays. The big boss comes back from vacation in a week, and I plan on running it over with him as well. I would really like to see if he will let me hold something. I know we would have a HUGE turn out and it would be a bit hit for the store! - Oh, just bought chicks from such-n-such... I need to get starter while I'm here! - lol. But, I won't be able to bring any. I'm not UTD on any of my testing this year, as I still have 50 or so birds to pick up and that's just for this month...

BUT, I'm still researching to find out what paperwork I need to get my hands on so no one gets in trouble. Including TSC. I will have to call my local ag office and find out what testing everyone will need once we get closer to it. Again, still got to wait on the big boss to agree. The only way he will is if it will bring possible revenue to the store, so idea's on how to pitch it would be AMAZING.

Hello everybody... I finally took pictures today of my chicken barn, I'm almost finished.

TX812 -

Glad to know I'm not the only one who did some serious building over the past few days.... Yours, however, looks much better than mine. Really envious of your coops! What size run are you going to put up, or are you going to put up a run? Or is that the run that the fencing shown is? ( if that made sense ) Also, where in the WORLD did you find bulk shavings? Great job! LOVE it!
