Texas

who knows the best place to get laying chickens around the DFW area?

my coop is almost done and i'll be looking for some layers to start with, then get some chickens once we get everything up and running and our soon to be baby boy gets a bit older.
I don't know about DFW but around here (central Texas/Bastrop area) they have a Facebook page. Ours is Cen Texas Farm. That's your best bet.
Good luck!

Anyone else preparing for this severe weather headed our way later today??

Yep. I was actually outside yesterday evening when the hail started coming down. (Ow) Looks like more is on the way. I think everything is as secure as it'll get - I hope that after yesterday the younger chickens understand better to take cover (some 12 week olds got startled and tried to take shelter under a sapling instead of the coop yesterday).

I'm trying to get this tractor coop built and can't seem to make any progress - this sucks...

Good luck everyone - stay safe!

Out here where we have wide open spaces (aka horizons) we can look to the north and see a lot of dark grey heading our way. It is not due to hit until mid-late afternoon but sure looks closer than that. The chickens at least, as dumb as they can be, will head back into their coop. The ducks and geese just stand there with their eyes closed. I guess "out of sight out of mind".

Oh yikes lol yeah I wouldn't recommend a sapling for hail protection! Silly birds!

Stay safe!

Yes it's already clouding up a LOT here - dark clouds and I've heard two separate things from 2 separate sources...one local source says between 2 & 9 will be the majority of our severe weather...weather channel says closer to a 4pm start time. Ugh. Kids get out of school at 3:15 & 3:27...and it's about 20 mins back from the school where the 3:27 dismissal is. Plus we wanted to run and do last minute checks of everyone after school. Looks like I may need to go out earlier just in case...

Everyone stay safe!

"Atmospheric ingredients are in place to produce “giant” hail with round one, possibly baseball size or larger."

"Second round of storms may have wind gusts to 60 mph and one or two tornadoes"

I think we'll be getting the worst of it later this evening. Prayers for everyone's safety.

West Central Texas (between Abilene and Coleman) we just got a Tornado Watch alert until midnight. So, from now into the evening it could be getting bad. There are some big nasty looking clouds but they appear to be pretty far away from us right now.

I think it's all going to miss us. Continued thoughts and prayers for those in its path. From KXAN weather:

AUSTIN (KXAN) — An increasing threat of dangerous severe storms prompted the Storm Prediction Center to issue a Tornado Watch for a large portion of Texas and Oklahoma this afternoon. The Watch includes San Saba County in the KXAN viewing area, and is effective until midnight.
The Tornado Watch has been given the rare designation “a Particularly Dangerous Situation” Watch, meaning several tornadoes and a few intense tornadoes are likely, widespread large hail up to four inches in diameter, and widespread wind damage with gusts to 80 mph are possible.
Fortunately for the KXAN viewing area, only the southern tip of the Watch box reaches San Saba County, and the most dangerous storms are forecast to mainly affect areas stretching from northwest Texas to Kansas. Parts of the KXAN viewing area (most of the Hill Country and Williamson County) are in the enhanced risk area for severe storms, meaning numerous severe storms, hail from quarter to hen egg size, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes are possible.
