I agree with Bluejean55girl on her choice for the same reasons. A revolver feels safer to carry loaded to me, is easy to operate, and for me is easier to be accurate with. Practice with your husbands .22. It will be cheapest and easiest to handle. Once you are familiar with it get something similar(single action, double action, semi-auto) in a larger caliber and a good holster. There are too many options to say what is best for you. A 50 foot shot with a handgun will take practice to be lethal and you really don't want to just wound the animal. Be safe and act responsibly when handling it. ALL guns are loaded(even if you watched someone else check it a minute before), never point it at something you don't want to kill or destroy(this includes anything behind your target), keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on target and ready to fire the weapon.
