why not just catch the dog and then tie him up and call SPCA back out to get the dog. This way the poor thing can find a loving home to go to and not just be left alone on some property that no one comes out t o check on let along him. Or to even play with the poor thing.
we had to shoot a dog a few months ago that came on the property and got one of my high priced chickens and pure bred too. its never the ones that we do not care to much about. Not to say we do not care about any of them.
Sorry you have had to deal with all this. And I am surprised as well that the parents are trying to hold on to the property. I would try and buy it lol

I feel your pain Vicki!!!
At least I only have 1 yellow lab to deal with. The dog "lives" next door...owner of the property is in prison until 2066, but he could get probation in 2036 if he behaves?!?!?! He was arrested and convicted for being involved with a 12 yr old girl...so I can track him through the child molestation web sites. Prison guy's parents are holding on to the property (for SOME reason) and put this lab there to help make the place look lived on. Most folks around here have about 10 acres or more. The parents are in their late 70's early 80's and live 2 hours away.
The last time I called the mother to try to explain the problems the dog was causing, she blew up on me!!! Shouted at me she was an old woman who couldn't do anything about the dog and to just go ahead and SHOOT him.
I too, contacted the SPCA, they emailed me and said they were working with the local authorities. I saw a sheriff's deputy come out and look for the dog with binoculars (dog was on my property), but dog didn't have one of my chickens in his mouth at the time.
Haven't heard anything else from SPCA.
The sheriff's deputies have been out here twice in the last 4 years, once about the dog and another time about the cattle on prison guy's land that got out and were running up and down the road. Both times I was told I could shoot the dog if he was harming my livestock.
I don't want to have the dog killed....it's not his fault he's been left all alone!!! I'm upset with the people who put him out here and left him all by himself.
Maybe an electric fence will have to be built??? But I'd rather that people be responsible for their dogs!!!

Love this thread! Didn't realize there was one out here just for us Texans! Well currently we r doing the "chicken math" lol, organizing new runs etc for our new ISBARS! We will be breeding BBS cochin, Polish, Ameraucana, EE, OE. I'm so excited!

shsaredroan - What a mess your in! I wouldn't want to shoot the dog either, but that would be the easiest thing, and in this case maybe the right thing. I'm sure you can't like the dog or take it in since he has killed your chickens, but you sure would get points in heaven if you did. I read where someone trained a dog to leave the chickens alone by putting one of the dead chickens on an electric fence and every time the dog touched the chicken it got shocked.

I have not been on this thread in awhile, hello to the people I already know, and Welcome to the people that have since joined this thread in my absenes. : )

I am hatching out chicks like crazy!! I have some Bantam Lavender Ameraucanas and some Coronation/Light Sussex hatching out (hopefully) tomarrow. Then next week is going to be crazy! I have something either going into lockdown, or hatching every single day! LOL

I am looking for some Black Orpingtons and a different line of Sussex. If anyone has some please contact me and we will work out a deal. The Black Orpingtons must be fairly decent type. I have a Chocolate Orpington roo that I am going to put with LF Black Orpingtons to try and create LF Chocolate Orpingtons.

Happy Wednesday everyone!! Kept the girls locked up again cause when I got home there was a stray big black dog in the yard and of course the momma dog (nor my 2 dogs) were not doing a **** thing about him being in the yard.

(1) Orumpoultry - glad the horsey is back home!! (2) Shesaredroan - I'm so sorry about your situation - I understand completely

Shesaredroan- Any thoughts about taking and keeping the dog yourself? Or has she gotten to your chickens and done damage in the past? I have two dogs, neither of which are too keen on the chickens, but it hasn't been terribly difficult to keep them apart. If there's going to be a dog in the area, might as well be yours.

Vicki- paintball guns have proven efficient for me in alerting stray animals that they're in a place they don't need to be. A square shot in the butt from several feet away should do it.

I have heard of that too and also tying it around the dogs kneck somehow and let him or her drag it around for the day or even 2 what the heck LOL
After that I do not think they would want to touch another chicken ha ha
I had to get after mine once for going after one of my chickens I just beat him with a rolled up news paper and he did not do it again. But I think partly he was trying to play as well but did not matter. He has not done it sense and our beagle leaves them alone too.
Now I am training 3 puppies to not chase the chickens. never a dull moment around here

Yes henryholub, I appreciate your suggestions.
Back 5 yrs ago when the land owner went to prison I worried about the dog and let him come over and hang out with my 3 dogs (2 prys and 1 part pry). Then when he (yellow lab) started going after my chickens I started fussing at him, chasing him, running after him with a stick in my hand, none of which seemed to help the problem. As a last resort I took my pistol out and shot at the ground as I yelled at him...this seemed to work for about a month....then he'd be back at it again. He's taken at least 12 of my birds during these years. In the mean time, my youngest pry starting to chase my chickens and my neighbor's guineas, following this yellow lab's behavior.
I've 'fostered, in a since' this yellow lab for over 5 years, and have tried to communicate with the 'people who left him over here'. They do not medicate him, they can not even touch him, they do leave dry dog food for him, but that's it!!!....he's gone feral.

My dogs all get their vet care, injections, heartworm, flea/tick meds.....these dogs all WORK for their care. They have done a wonderful job of keeping the coyotes away from my place as well as being my friends & guardians......all my chickens were wiped out in '08 by coyotes, so I started building my Pyrenees dog group to keep the 'yotes away.
I tried to care for this yellow lab in the beginning, but after he continually dug into my chicken yard and carried off my chickens my patience has grown thin!!
These are not chickens from the feed store....I'm raising chicks from eggs I've order from BYC members from NY to WA and lots of places in between.

A few days ago I started making contact with several Labrador Retriever Rescue Groups of Texas, to see if I could get any help from them.
I don't think they are going to help me. Sigh

People who are not responsible for their dogs should not have dogs. Unfortunately many do and that leaves the rest of us to have to deal with the problems they create.
