Texas

sounds similar to mine, minus the Feather coloring.

I have some white leghorns, pullets, that are currently under an EE rooster, that @TexasLisa was kind enough to donate to the cause.

This year, I will be adding a new coop/run, for my blue egg layers, not sure if I'm going with CLB's or Auracanas, or AM's.

If I use AM's and have a black AM rooster, that would work with my current sex link project too......decisions abound.
HEY! I have been wondering about 'Junior'. Is he a gentleman like his father? If possible, I would love to see what he has turned into. Please keep me posted.

Ms Lisa, he can't afford to be a gentleman.

them leghorns are fast and skittish........lol

other than that, he is a good rooster.

looks after his ladies, and leaves the kids alone, during feeding. But he is quick too, guess he has to be, but we let them out in the big yard a few weeks back, and he was the toughest to catch.....
BW, Junior's dad, will come up to me for treats. If I try to touch him, he moves sideways and it sounds like he is saying, 'nononononooo'. I hope he turns out to be a productive rooster. BW has been the best one I have had so far.

I hope Junior does.

so far it's about 2 out of 5 for fertility, but I attribute that to the leghorns' quickness, and too much run/coop area.......in a month, once I clear out the growout pen, I'm gonna pen him with 5 leghorn pullets for a couple weeks, and then check again, if it's still not better, I'll start putting him in a dog crate with two pullets......lol

I'm about to build my first coop. I found an 8x8 coop design here on BYC by Mikeee.

I live in Texas (an hour north of Houston) and it gets super hot in the summer. My plans are to build it under a large tree in our back yard and I'll be adding some windows for air flow. The kind you cut out after you build it and attach a hinge to open the 'window' and prop it up with a 2x2. And I'll cover the window hole with heavy chicken / rabbit wire.

Is there a certain way the coop door should face? Towards the north/south/east/west? Windows on a certain side for breeze? Or anything else I need to know before I start building?

Thanks

This is my small coop - 6x6. I put windows on all sides with shutters. The coop is in the shade and thanks to the oak tree shedding all over the roof of the run, so is the entire run. I do have a fan up near the top vent for when the temperatures get into the upper 90's. In the winter, I just shut the shutters and they do just fine.
