Texas

What kind of stupid law is that. Roosters crow in the morning and here and there during the day. You can barely hear them inside the house. Dogs bark all the time and make all kinds of noise but that's okay.:barnie:confused::confused:
I assume it comes down to noisy animals, which would include barking dogs. That's why I gotta re-home my rooster (I found a potential home for him!) because roosters aren't allowed. We had to fight a bit to keep our hens so a roo is a no go.

I put the babies (ordered 8, got 13) in with my broody hen last night. During the swap from golf balls to live chicks she was mad and gave me a few good bites, which actually kinda made me optimistic, because she has been so nonchalant about me reaching under her before.
She was pretty confused for a couple minutes, gave a few angry clucks at the new chicks or me, nipped at one that crawled in front of her but then started talking to them as I was tucking them behind her. I hung out with all lights out to make sure she wasn't going to kill anyone. Would occasionally turn on the red light to have a look. All seemed well, though there were a few that were sitting next to her or in front of her. Rechecked half an hour later and she had readjusted so that all 13 chicks were tucked neatly under her sides and chest.
Checked her again at 2:30am. All babies were tucked in sleeping while she would talk to them. Checked again at 4:30, same story.
Went out early this morning and they are all over her, even pulling on her poor white ears, at which she does nothing and just talks to them and fluffs up to tuck them in.
I set up their food and water in her nesting box and they all ate and drank. So far so good. Mama hen was insistent on the "2nd floor" nesting box, so I have it covered in hardware cloth to keep everyone where they are supposed to be. As long as this continues to go so well, tomorrow I'll move them to a fenced area in the coop with a ground floor box. I'm so happy and excited. I'll take pictures later.

Howdy, First post to the TX Thread here at BYC! Name's Allen and I'm basically full time retired and just bought a property in pretty much the deepest southern part of Texas, I can tell you that "Down here it is like a whole other Country"! I would have 0 chance of scoring a job in the service sector as I am Bilingual, but don't speak spanish. I do kinda like this part of Texas for the nice breakfast tacos, but hate seeing how animals are treated. However, it totally fits my choice of lifestyle, no homeowners association, 1 acre lot, and outside city limits on an unincorporated property. I live in a colonia and they aren't at all like what you would expect after reading about them in the Dallas Morning News or Austin Statesman. They do have running water and eventually we will be connected to a sewer system, but I don't have any issues with my septic system at all.

I am currently a couple to a few months into chickenship. Raised 10 pet quality(straight run) Sumatras from hatched 1 days. They were shipped from I assume Meyer's in Polk, OH as that is what the tracking said their origination was even though I ordered from another site. My Sumatras are now at the 2.5 month stage and really lazy as we are experiencing the Caterpillar Apocalypse my 2 pullets don't even run them down they just lay down and eat the ones that come their way. The 6 remaining boys do run them down but after 5 minutes they are getting full crops and then retire to rest in either the tall grass away from the sun or in the coop. Fortunately I was able to unload 2 cockrels on a neighbor who was surprised I was giving these beautiful guys away for free, but with an 8:2 ratio I'm sure that would be the death of my girls. My wife believes we were taken advantage of by the breeder, but I'm willing to give them credit that this was an honest Straight Run(first major chicken keeping mistake).

So long story short.....If anyone from BYC wants 4-5 Black Sumatra pet quality cockrels, and I am willing to drive as far as Austin(5 hour drive for me), please let me know because I have yet to buy an axe, but I can make a nice working height tree stump.

Hi AllenK! Welcome to the Texas thread! Good luck finding homes for the Sumatras. That's mighty kind of you to offer the drive. I know I don't need them, I still have a polish roo who is contemplating a date with the stump. Until then he's happy, even if I roll my eyes and sigh every time I look at him.

I'm thinking at some point I might consider craigslisting them, but they will probably no longer be living the posh lifestyle I offer them. It is probably less cruel to just take em to the stump and learn how to butcher a chicken. Never something that was on my bucket list but hey you never know someday I may have to give up the 99% vegetarian life choice. Like for some reason WW3 happens at least living cuddled up to Mexico we are a less likely target=)

Other benefits I forgot to mention about living in this region some of my flocks favirote treats are dirt cheap at the Fruit Stands....Mango 4/$1, small round watermelon usually<$2, bags of limes at 4.4 pound each $2(my treat not theirs), oh yes and I b ought a 5 pound papaya for $1.75 the other day havent tested it on the birds yet by i bet it is a winner. 2Kilos of roma tomatoes $2, 2 kilo bags of carrots are $1 same with cucumbers of course its all cash and carry and tax exempt anyways. Unshucked corn usually fluctuates between 8-4/$1 crowd favorite #2.

IN BRIEF- Chicken treats are quite inexpensive here. Mango is absolutely their favorite from the above mentioned list.

I'm thinking I'm going to try to sell my wife on slaughter as a potentially useful bit of knowledge that we should acquire. Then we can donate them to our dirt poor neighbors as this is a colonia in Cameron County TX. To me that sounds like the humane thing to do and gives me more time to decide which bachelor gets the rose! I'm leaning towards "Ten" he got that name when he missed bedcheck on his first night transitioning to the coop. He really is a sweet roo and closest IMO to the breed standard. Sure he is also a slow grower but when I'm out drinking tea and watching them range he is the one usually within reach or under my feet. Thank you for the nice thought out and verbose welcome plus the tip.
