It is absolutely amazing how AC repair guys quote my wife for their work($440). I called the guy back saying I only need 2 pounds of R-22 and I can order 30 pounds for 200 dollars. Then he didn't understand what a 52C was(Army for AC repairman). Regardless we are now under $200 for the quote.
You may want try and laugh about this experience of mine last year.... So 2 summers ago we had a new outdoor unit installed, system pipes purged & cleaned then the R410a installed. Last summer the system check up "under warranty" and he has this app/website he used with the table that had a snazzy GUI for testing the different components. Starter CAP, Run CAP, motherboard, low & high side PSI sensors .... You get the idea, right? The app shows how the CAP's were operating at ~80% & should be considered replacement in the very near future. I asked to see the data, he showed me his tablet, I took a snapshot of the model# and specs of the recommended CAP upgrade and told him we will gladly wait for the time being. He said okay and told me the cost of it's replacement if it happens out of warranty window.....
I waited till he was done and gone then, I searched for those 2 Cap's saved them in my
Amazon wish list folder and went on to other stuff on my plate for that day.
IIRC the upcharge was like 70%???? Not including the service call charge.
Our other system was replaced last year for upstairs and we had an oddball event happen last fall/winter under warranty & this tech walked me through the situation, reset the MB and told me how as the weather hits a small window of temperature when switching to reverse for heating that it can sometimes throw a low side "too low PSI" code and place the compressor into limp mode for safety.
Well, it happened again this spring and he walked me through it over the phone. We went for 2 weeks testing the system and me logging the codes on the MB..... He was mystified and offered to swap out this little valve on the line (I looked up the cost) and ran across a massive class action lawsuits for this part. Good news is that mine is still running fine, bummer is I may have to spend the $400 total for the service call to eventually replace this part as the original part is not inside the window of build dates to get it free from that CAL.
