Texas

Good morning everyone! Looking for some coop advice. If I were to paint this shed white and replace the 3 door panels with hardware cloth do y'all think it would make a good banty coop (approx 29 sq ft)? I'm perpetually worried about ending up with unintentional fried chicken in the Texas summer heat. Let me know your ventillation/other modification suggestions, please!

That could work, I'd also suggest extending the roof overhang a good 18 inches or more to protect against blowing rain and snow. Will this building be in the shade?

I plan on having the solid sides facing the prevalent winds to hopefully cut down on any rain intrusion, but I'll look into extending the roof. No shade yet but I'm hoping to get a small shade tree or two that aren't going to drop branches that will crush the thing. Have large oaks in the yard right now.

My coop is built out of metal siding and has tons of ventilation, but I strongly advise placing it in a somewhat shaded area, our heat can be brutal! I have fans and they keep it the same as the outside temp, it can be rough on the ladies

It gets so hot! And I thought Florida heat was bad lol.
Yeah I was thinking about possibly installing solar fans to help keep the air circulating in the day. Only shade option I currently have are those oaks I mentioned. You think it would be fine by those? I just worry about them shedding big branches in a storm and caving the roof in. That and it would put the coop far from the house.
Definitely open to shade suggestions! I was considering getting 1-2 smaller shade trees. Or maybe an arbor? Trying to avoid tarps because I know I'll never hear the end of how ugly it looks :lau

It doesn't necessarily have to be under the oak trees, just positioned to where the trees shade it during the hottest part of the day😉 Just FYI chicken keeping and ugly are always a work in progress 😊 It's taken me 3 years to get to what I consider "nice looking" and I'm still working on it.

Sounds like I'm going to have to survey some shadows this weekend. Hopefully one of those trees casts a shadow that isn't a whole acre away from the house (or in a spot that tends to flood)!
Holy moly I've missed alot on this thread!
Welcome back! :frow

The Kittery is full of kittens and mommas looking for homes! I would encourage anyone who's looking for a companion to check here first. People who pick up a kitten from Pet Sense will receive a voucher for a free spay/neuter. I have personally had great experiences adopting from them.
I always get my cats as strays. I have never gotten one from a breeder or as a free kitten from someone that didn't spay a female. 😍I'm my own cat shelter. Sigh.

I can't handle anymore tho. I'm at 11 now and a new stray was dropped out here. Why do people not see them as a comment or a responsibly that they should not put off on to others unexpectedly?

Anyways if I win the power ball some day I'll have a small animal shelter and donate some to Galveston co. Animal Alliance too.
