Seems like I "talked" to others in my area, but forgot to introduce myself.
We are technically in Cannon, but our address is Van Alstyne, Texas, which is just on the edge of the Grayson County/Collin County line.
We are 6 m east of Central Expressway (those not from here might know it as "75").
The DH is an engineer (currently recovering from a serious illness and going back to work in a couple of weeks or so), and I am an RN and a therapist. What he and I have in common (among other things) is a love for animals. We have rescued 10 dogs (two passed on at very old ages) and I couldn't tell you how many cats. At present we have 15 cats, subject to change if someone comes to our vet to euthanize "a perfectly good cat." He always calls us. (Always room for a dozen more, my DH says.)
We have 12.5 acres, I got my first chickens about 6 months ago, and they did a fair job of giving maybe 3 eggs a week between them (one RIR and one Buff Orph). I cleverly bought a dozen chicks from the local feed and seed, "pretty much" guaranteed to be pullets. All of them roos. Had no idea what to do with them, asked around, no one wanted them. Eight went to "work" at a ranch scratching up cow poo, and I guess the last four did too--one RIR and three Buffs. Anyway, I'm back to my original old ladies and three barred rock pullets I bought last week.
I am very much hoping to expand the flock. Also hoping to find them from someone other than a hatchery. I can see selling or giving eggs away. I just like the chickens. They have their own yard about 100 sf, maybe a little bigger, and have been happy living in a reinforced tent. But now the weather is changing and today is coop day! Whoohoo!
Won't eat them, I guess I should say that too. They'll live out their lives as pets, pretty much. I need for my chicken to come from the grocery. The ones that I have had a relationship with, such as it is, have to be protected.
Anyway, so glad to now BYC is here!!! Have already met some lovely people!
Christine,
Glad to hear about you and your family. Hope your DH is feeling better...
I too cannot eat my chickens. Right now the majority of my 60 birds are over 5 years old, about 1/4 are over 7. I get 2-3 eggs a day right now if I am lucky.
Hi All
I am in the Dallas Denton area, anyone else up this way? I have LF Cochins, bantam cochins, silkies and OEG.
Would love to meet others in this area maybe swap eggs this spring :0)
We are in West Texas....Midland and farming in the desert. My daughter wanted chickens when we moved to the country about 5 years ago and her dad got her 5 and she fell in love with the ladies. He saw her love and we enjoyed them as well so the next thing we knew is he ordered 100 Plymouth Barred Rocks, we have grown into a few other kinds over the years.

I'm still in awe about the tragic event that took place at Fort Hood. I see you're a proud Army wife in Belton and no doubt were touched by the event. God bless you and your husband and the great state of Texas. I've been to Belton many times because my wife has kin up there and we go there for family reunions. We live in SE Texas(Vidor) Tell your husband many thanks for serving this great country for us.
