It's true that too much of anything is not a good thing. But I feel that giving a layer 14-16% is just not enough. And that a growing bird needs 18-20% minimum. I tend to just give them all 18% grower once the little ones are a few months old and put out free choice oyster shell. But before that, the chicks get 20% medicated feed with even a bit of something like Calf Manna thrown in. I am talking LF breeder quality Orpingtons though and it could be that they just have a higher need then some of the smaller breeds.

I am sorry if I implied otherwise. I stated in my post that 20% was not over the top. I forget my colloquialisms are not universally understood. I meant that to say that 20% is ok for providing as feed to chicks. I do feel that 22% (not 20%) in their food is a bit over the top for a grown bird, since they will get additional proteins from foraging; however, that is solely my opinion and worth precisely nothing

. Seriously, though, H&H starter-grower is 20% protein. So

i was so happy when I found this in my favorite feed store last week! I'm using the Scratch grains to add to my Layena crumbles in my FF. When I'm finally out of the Layena I'll go H & H all the way

Thank you for that link. I'm going to go to Pflugerville tomorrow and get some layer feed. That sounds like what I am looking for.

this weeks batch of chicks started hatching last night and one is a silkie CROSS!!!! lol seems that all the boys wanted (and got) a piece of dottie! Silver Laced Wyandotte X Buff Silkie!!! woulda never guessed it was a silkie mix but when i picked it up there were 10 piggies!!! lol lil Mc Fluffinz is gettin his job dun!!! lol

thats what i was thinkin.... accually i was thinkin of callin and askin about a 1/4 ton of starter and 3/4 ton of layer!!!! lol but i think DW would kill me!

thats just great! now i have 2 in the yard! her and my dog Weda! but shes a big B!!!! i aint palyin! im lucky she lets us have the chickens! i think im pushin it with rabbits! DW wants a pig!
after that gurl pulled me thru 40yards of thick brush to get to a BULL out back behind Ft Hood im thinkin NO BIG GAME for her!!!!
but she is gettin old... pushin 9 this august

Ah go for it.. I pick up at least a half ton every week when I go buy feed!

I've been working on a feed mix of my own (I think you saw the post, Yinepu). I just have to do that math to justify the expenditure for the mill (not really that bad a price) and the grains (ouch). Since I would be buying them in bulk, it's not too bad. But, I will wind up with something on the order of 10000 pounds of feed (that may be an exaggeration, I've not done the math, yet). Way more than I'm going to need in any given year, right now anyway. But, I think the cost will work out to actually save me money. $30-$35/50# bag can run up the feed bill pretty quickly, especially with my dramatically growing flock. I can get bulk grains and seeds and legumes to make up my mix from Pleasant Hill Grain. Their prices are reasonable and their shipping isn't insane. Now, it's just a matter of doing the math and seeing if buying it and milling it and mixing it myself is worth the effort or if I should just stick with H&H (which I adore).

Oh - btw - the girls have finally gotten their run attached to their coop and are out having a blast. My honey just sent me the photo...
