Texas

I live in Arizona and looking to move in the near future. I used to be an over the road driver, found Texas to my liking. It has everything, I like; hunting fishing, and people that believe in live and let live, and self responsibility. The state has several climates, high desert to low desert, tropical to deathly dry, you name it Texas has it.

I am looking for a small town, I'm 65 soon to be 67 so there is no chance of living long enough not to be a stranger in Texas. The area West of Temple, east of Junction, south of Dallas, and north of San Antonio.... A big area.
Looking forward to you moving in! I live near Glen Rose and I love the climate here so far. It's pretty windy which has some advantages. Hope to see pics of your new flocks soon!
hello fellow Texans, I'm so close to pulling the trigger and adding chickens to my list of hobbies. I want to keep it small 3 to 5, I live near Boerne on 1.3 acres. My 3 biggest concerns are; how much care time do they really take? I don't want a rooster, if I get one what do I do with it? Really how bad is the smell? If it's 50 feet from the house am I going to be able to smell the coop? Are the flies bad?

Thanks
Rick
Welcome to BYC! I have a flock of (thinks about it) 22 chicks and chickens and 3 turkey babies. My flock of 5 lives outside and literally sleep under my bedroom window. I haven't noticed an odor, unless I give them mexican scraps. For some reason burrito scraps make them stinky. The other 17 are in a brooder box in my spare bedroom, and I don't notice a bad smell there either. But I keep it pretty clean. I just (well almost, they haven't got here yet to get him) got rid of one of my three roosters. Though I think one of my guaranteed pullets is going to be a roo. Which means I really didn't change the number of roosters.

I haven't noticed flies, but that could be it's so windy where I live that flies aren't so much of a problem.
Rainy day in North Texas yall.I'm new to the BYC community and have some babies i could use help determining their breeds.variety of 7 bantams. any help is appreciated! Yall have a good day!

Do you have pictures of your little bantams? That would help a lot in determining what they are. And welcome to BYC, this is my favorite site. My DH (dear husband) is forever laughing at me and all the chicken friends I have on here. Hopefully you will make some and have lots of fun.

Welcome to your dreams.  As far as the stranger thing goes, Texas is very welcoming to newcomers if they have a Texas frame of mind.  Sounds like you do.

I have always gotten along well. Never had problem in finding safe place to park my truck, all you need to do is ask. In fact more then once I was asked if I could keep an eye on their place, giving me a cell no to call. I had a truck dog, would wake me in empty lots if anyone came around. Respect is the key in Texas.

I have a large garden and chickens at this time. Hoping to be able to get at lest a couple of acres, enough land for a 50 to 70 chickens free range, a guard donkey, and a few goats (meat and milk). That depends on what the land will carry. I am on SS so I need to work or be able to feed myself. I would think I died and was living in heaven if I could have a nice Brown Swiss and a couple of pigs. I love pork between 60 and 80 pounds live. I have a big asset now, I own free and clear, and myself.

I have a 6'x10' covered pen and I small coop for 8 chickens. I leave the coop door open, lock the up inside

I do not have problems with coyotes lately, but Harris hawks yes. Donkeys hate coyotes, will even go after coyotes that are passing thru. I do not believe in removing predictors, they help the land, but I will not fees them. My late husband had a Great Dane that loved coyotes. When he chicken out his ranch the hole area within a half day travel emptied of coyotes within hours of arriving. It would be days before resident coyotes returned. They had a cow/calf operation, part of the job is knowing the predictors. When he moved back they started to have a problem with rodents (such as rabbits and such). One dog, that loves coyotes..... He didn't kill them, he would drag them home and keep them cornered to play with. I wonder if they would have left the area if he killed them?

The roo is leaving today. Regardless. I just didn't realize that she was being protected by him. I'll give her a few days to see if she gets along with the chicks. If not then, I will soon have my favorite chicken up for grabs... Which makes me sad but I won't subject her to torment. She was my surprise chicken so many years ago. (She is three now) She was one of my original flock. The last one after this roo goes. But I can't stand him anymore, and they need him. So it works out. I just don't want to lose my sweet little Chickadee.

That's my little Chickadee. Her back feathers are worn out from being a favorite. You can kind of figure out her size by the size of the chain link next to her.
If you do have to put her up for grabs, let me know. I'll see what I can do about convincing The Man to let me take her in.

You'll find Texas to be a very welcoming state. And, the area you are looking into is great, in my opinion. I like the central west area. We live NW outside of Georgetown, and love it.

Okay, I got some bad news.  I was working on trying to help a little chick that had slipped tendon.  He gave up on me yesterday.  He was my husbands favorite chick, he personally would wake up through the night to take care of the little guy (which I can barely get him awake to go to work....).  The chick went a whole day without water and had finally decided even food wasn't what he wanted.  So I put him down today.  I am sad but my husband is in tears.

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of someone that has black/dark brown chicks.  I really would like to get him one.   He thinks their little faces, "Are just too cute!"  But he doesn't like the yellow colored chicks.  I found some of those but he doesn't want one.  He likes the darker colored chicks.  And I don't want anymore from tsc.  For one I don't want six more chicks!  The most I could go is four.  If anyone is around the Glen Rose, Granbury, Cleburne, Burleson areas and has dark colored chicks for sale please let me know.  I am very much interested in buying.  I hate seeing him this sad.

I have chicks if you want one the hatched a few days ago Tuesday to be exact

nope.. I think my phone can take videos (not sure.. I don't know how to check.. but it's an older "android" and i think that's a standard feature even on the old ones)..
Anyway,, we do have a movie camera and my husband said he needs to set it up when he gets home because a lot of people have asked for videos of Maya.. so I'll have to remind him!
Please do, I think it would be interesting for a lot of people if you did some tests with him on tape. Show him photos of animals / people he's never seen before and ask him what it is. I don't doubt that he is as smart as a teenager - or smarter!
