I've been working on a feed mix of my own (I think you saw the post, Yinepu). I just have to do that math to justify the expenditure for the mill (not really that bad a price) and the grains (ouch). Since I would be buying them in bulk, it's not too bad. But, I will wind up with something on the order of 10000 pounds of feed (that may be an exaggeration, I've not done the math, yet). Way more than I'm going to need in any given year, right now anyway. But, I think the cost will work out to actually save me money. $30-$35/50# bag can run up the feed bill pretty quickly, especially with my dramatically growing flock. I can get bulk grains and seeds and legumes to make up my mix from Pleasant Hill Grain. Their prices are reasonable and their shipping isn't insane. Now, it's just a matter of doing the math and seeing if buying it and milling it and mixing it myself is worth the effort or if I should just stick with H&H (which I adore).

Oh - btw - the girls have finally gotten their run attached to their coop and are out having a blast. My honey just sent me the photo...

You are not saying the H&H is $30 to $35 for 50 # are you.

Lol.. it looks like they are enjoying it.

Just called the feed store. I can get bags of wheat for 12.50 (50 pound bag)..
I'll need to look up your recipe and see what it would cost me to make it

Thank you for that link. I'm going to go to Pflugerville tomorrow and get some layer feed. That sounds like what I am looking for.
You may already know , but if you run males with your females, then layer feed is NOT the way to go. Layer feed has the extra calcium that females need for egg laying which males don't need.

We've found it is easiest to have free choice oyster shell and the females take the oyster shell that they need and the males don't have to get fed too much calcium. Our chickens lay thick shelled, thick membraned eggs - much thicker than commercial eggs.

Indeed. Hey, it's better than ordering it online for the same price (including shipping) for only 20#.

I'm not sure what it costs at other places. I have a pretty awesome store I use, though. I use them instead of the TSC that's right across the highway from them because they are more personable, actually know *** they are talking about (one of the main people shows Faverolles), and aren't a huge chain.

And, I can place orders for bulk shipments of a ton or more at a time, if I wanted...I don't want. **laughs**

Thank you, bnjrob, I was aware of that but it never hurts to repeat it for others who don't know. I don't have males and my girls are not allowed to date yet.

I had originally wanted organic, non-soy, omega 3 layer feed for when my chicks got to be 18 weeks old. I bought a bag of a competitors' s organic layer feed which was not at all what I was looking for and the waste of feed irritated me.

Sweet. I really need to make a run up there and talk to him about what it would cost to haul in what I need to make it up. I'm open to tweaks, as well. I got a lot of grief because of the seeds in it; but, they didn't see the ratios, so...yeah. Anyway, I think it's worth considering, anyway.

What kind of wheat?

H&H provided that for me, which is why I went with it. It's not a synthetic injection of Omega 3s, either - it's introduced by using Flax in the meal. Something I appreciate. Added to it, they understand the necessity of micro nutrients and find ways of including it organically rather than chemically...I was happy to find it. Especially as I wasn't sure that I wanted to really run with this hard core. Now...well...yeah. I'm chick-addicted.
