She's kinda not joking. It's a very chatty thread. I love it.

From what I've been reading about eggs, this is accurate. I'm not saying the birds aren't excellent....just saying that somewhere down the line, someone got a little on the side, is all.

For some reason, I was always of the understanding that a blue egg is indicative of a pure line. And, seeing the genetics, this is true. If there is anything in the mix that isn't blue, it dilutes it - causing either really light blue eggs (when crossed with a white) or greenish/olive (when crossed with a brown) or even pinks/light purples (when crossed with a plum). Nothing wrong with it - just that there is some other gene lurking about from who knows when that throws the colour of the eggs off of their "true blue". A pure blue to a pure blue will never lay anything but blue. The genetics just don't allow it.

Not trying to be snooty or snarky at all - I'm not dissing the birds in the least. Not saying they aren't top notch in the breed. Not even remotely

Just talking pure genetics. Genetics is a tricky, snarly mess! Especially when a recessive decides to make a sudden appearance.
I totally agree. If they are not blue there is something else in the woodpile. That is what I love about EEs. They are like a box of chocolates. I have bed some of my EEs to an OE roo and have been breeding the them to my Lav roo for some different mixes and for true blue egg color. Only one of my 3 laying EEs lays a really blue egg.
I didn't take your post as snooty at all and I hope I didn't say anything to make you feel you were. We're all here to learn and enjoy. I'm not the best at communication sometimes.....I've heard this from my DW many times s it must be true.

I didn't think it was snooty either. And if I sounds that way I sure don't mean to be. I am just going by what I have seen personally. And while I sure can't explain it, I have had eggs shipped in that were blue, hatched chicks, grew them out and had not all of the pullets lay blue. Now what's behind those before I got them I'll never know. But anyway :)
I have many times thought about skipping keeping the pure bird colors that way and just mixing to make EE's & off color Ameraucana. It's alot more fun to have the box of chocolates I think :) I would love to have a pink egg layer!

lol.. that's one of the reasons farm families way back when had so many kids (trying to keep the thread PG13.. lol) was for the farmhands!
my mother came from a family of 13 kids.. my dad had 11 kids in his...
I had 6 brothers and sisters... yup.. farmhands

My husband has struck again... in addition to the 33 previous eggs...
in today's mail:

32 quail eggs (5 were cracked)
12 Jersey Giant eggs from Maria Hall bloodlines
15 Euskal Oiloa eggs from Skyline and Greenfire lines
celebrate.gif

10 Euskal Oiloa eggs from Skyline bloodlines

so that's 70 chicken eggs so far (yes.. he said I am still missing a box of eggs that were shipped out today!)
plus the quail

methinks he loves me

... or he really loves chicken dinner...

gotta be one of the best birthday presents regardless... I just hope the postal service wasn't too mean to the eggs

Secretly I know he's laughing cause I'm the one who gets to build a bunch of new coops
I think I'm getting a Man Crush!

I have had birds from some of the well known lines lay olive & mint green eggs. We'll never know what they did to get that going if there was a diffferent breed added in. It just makes it more an uphill thing for those wanting to stick with the blue eggs and nice birds...
I have had hens from well known lines not lay a blue egg. The very 1st eggs I bought hatched out some clean faced birds, from a well known line. Some laid a nice blue and some a blue green. All hatched from pretty blue eggs. I won't get into names as that would just cause a mess and a huge fight I am sure. I bought eggs recently from a very well known line and they were so ugly I refused to use them. I was then told that some people breeding for show are not interested in egg color and that was why it didn't matter. So maybe that's where there can be a brown egger in the mix if someone has used it get something in the look over the egg color. And what is a true blue to one is not to another. And the what is an EE vs an Ameraucana thing is a mess too. I won't even start on the EE vs Ameraucana thing as it'd probably get the thread shut down.

Hope everyone getting chicks and eggs from wherever are just happy with what they get :) They are all cute and lots of fun to have around!
I agree. I consider the Wild type EE to be Ameraucanas. If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck, it's a duck. Some people get WAY too excited about the whole Ameraucana vs EE thing. I enjoy them all and am having a blast.
Hadn't even heard of it...I'll have to check it out. Beaumont's not that far from a few of our kids, so it'd be great to do a hit at the fair then dinner with the kids.
We are going Saturday. The breeder I just got my BCMs from is showing there. He just won Best of Variety, Reserve Best of Breed &. Reserve best Continental with a BCM roo at the Marans Chicken Club USA Nationals in Newnan, Georgia. WoooHooo Congratulations Ernie!
