Multiple issues here that you aren't going to be able to fix. Did you file a complaint with the sherriff today? Now that you know who they belong to, you can file a complaint, including going over all the damage costs done and the sheriff might be willing to visit. If so, a visit by a deputy might scare them a little.

They've pretty much left you no choice but to shoot the dogs. But I would say that you might want to make the complaint with the sheriff first. That way they can't come back to you demanding restitution for the dogs in case they think of calling the sheriff themselves because you killed a dog. AND in case they are real trash that might try to get pay back for shooting their dogs.

Scenario:

Over the past few months we have had 17 rabbits, a couple of ducks, a goose and a few chickens get killed by dogs, plus an emu attacked (we knew it was dogs by the tracks left behind plus I saw the dogs attacking the emu)

We had assumed the dogs were strays since people love to dump their dogs out in the country...

At 12:30 this morning one of my dogs started barking.. i got up to investigate and heard dog barking outside.. My first thought was.. "did I forget and leave one of mine outside when I let them out this evening to go do their business...'
Quick head count.. all of mine are accounted for (it only took a few seconds) so I grabbed a flashlight and headed outside

I turned the light towards the commotion and saw three dogs (2 white with black on their heads and 1 white with brown on it's head).. pit mixes I am assuming.. they had the broad "pit style" chest and blocky head. The dogs were chasing my mini horse around.. so I went in to grab a gun

My husband in his infinite wisdom likes to keep all the ammo in a different room than the guns.. even though i have told him time and time again that in an emergency (such as this one) I need a clip loaded and ready within close proximity of said gun. I had assumed my favorite of the guns was like that.. but no... so by the time I found the ammo the dogs had high tailed it away.. It is just my husband and myself here.. no happy little children with inquisitive fingers and no trained monkey with a penchant for fire arms.. so it would seem logical to me to have ready access to weaponry especially since he is deployed a lot leaving me home to fend for myself..

Cut to 5:30 this morning
I head out with puppy in tow for her morning "duties" and lo and behold.. three dogs (2 white/black 1 white/brown) in my yard yet again.....

At this point in time I am determined to see where they belong.. so as I walk out the front door I am greeted by the sight of the dogs... the two white with black were... "busy" doing things that male and female dogs do when a certain mood strikes their fancy.. (in other words.. puppies within 63 days)... JOY!.. more little terrors to kill my animals!.. the dogs see me.. and (as soon as possible) lead me back to their beloved owners. one of my neighbors on the next road over.

Now I have had reason to speak to these people before.. a few years ago a dog of theirs decided that duck dinner was definitely on the menu ... and so I confronted them about said duck dinners (yes.. more than one)... they (at the time) promised me it "would never happen again" and that they were installing an "invisible fence".. a few weeks after that their son came over to ask me if I had seen the dog because it had become MIA.. and after that time there was no barking from their direction until many months later.

Now like a foolish person i had thought they had taken my complaint to heart and were now keeping the new dog(s) confined... apparently.. NOT

back to this morning.. it was now about 5:45ish.. dogs had led me "home" so I went up and rang the bell.. after a few moments the mother of the family came to the door..

i asked her if the dogs were theirs.. she said yes they were.. so I proceeded to tell her in as much detail as possible as to what had transpired over the past few months. During our conversation she admitted that "about 3 or 4 months ago" (gee.. the same amount of time the killing of my livestock had started..) that one of the "other neighbors had brought one of her dogs home to her and informed her it had been running loose". She mentioned that they had thought it would be a good idea to give me their phone number so I could call them and let them know if their dogs were loose.. (what?.. it's MY job to keep track of her dogs???).. they never followed through on that anyway..but i digress...

So after I went through the tally of dead livestock .. damage done to hutches and so on.. with the total of just livestock in the hundreds of dollars.. she just stood there ..never once saying she was sorry. never once offering to make restitution.... just with a blank look on her face like it wasn't HER problem the dogs were killers and running loose! (Perhaps it was MINE for having livestock???  *shrugs*)
So out of the blue she asked me "what do they do with the  animals when they kill them?".. I felt like replying "they invite them over for tea!.. what else!".. so instead I went into the gory description of what remains I have found left behind.. i am sure they brought some home to dear ol Mom.. since I never could account for all the body parts.. but she probably figured the animals walked over on their own and flayed themselves open on her back steps... or maybe it was a Texas roadkill kind of buffet and she had dinner for the stew pot!

So then I also informed her to expect puppies in 63 days give or take since I had seen her male and female dog "tied" in my yard.. Now this woman has children.. their dogs have had puppies in the past (maybe not THESE particular three.. but I do know they had puppies before since the boys had told me about it when they were looking for the missing dog). She looked at me like.. "well if they were tied up what's the problem".. so I went on to tell her they were mating.. still a blank look on her face.. I added in,. "making puppies.. doggy sex".. she still stood there with the dumb look on her face. I am only to assume she will think the puppies when they are born will have been a late delivery by the Easter Bunny or maybe a flock of storks!

As I was ready to leave.. letting her know one more time that if her dogs came back they would be shot on sight she commented.. 'well. i guess we can put them in the pen for now until we fix something else..."
Uhm.. ya think?.. nah.. just let them continue to come over and kill off everything else that they can.. besides I can use the target practice!.. *rolls eyes*

what astonished me the most was her complete lack of concern or taking responsibility for what they have allowed their animals to do to mine.
Sorry for your loss, we have fought neighbors dogs for years, and I don't have any good advice for you except take pictures of the dogs on your place if you can and keep a good record and cost of all livestock! You have to be able to prove it was their dogs to get anywhere in court believe me when I say you have to prove what animal it was or you are wasting your time and money. It's sad to deal with people like that and if you shoot the dogs make sure you kill them or they will go after you for vet bills to fix their dang dog!!! Unfortunately that's the world we have become. We finally had a man on the last 3 sheep we lost pay for the damage but we only got market value for the animals just because one of them was one of our bottle babies and was a pet didn't matter! Best wishes on prosecuting and I hope you have a lot better luck with it than I've had.

provided by this section is not liable for damages to the owner, keeper, or person in control of the dog or coyote.

I know I won't get a cent. Even if I ended up dragging in a pile of dead bodies and a video tape. Sure they can be found liable.. but that won't force them to pay.

yes the law covers you and no you wouldn't get a cent. But filing a complaint can help keep you from a bigger mess if the sheriff knows up front that there is a problem if these people decided to start crap with you. Cuz then you won't have as much explaining to do when you do shoot them. Shooting people's dogs, even a righteous shoot, can bring out ugly stuff in people. And people like that...no telling what they might do.

I'm not worried about it..when I told her I would have to shoot the dogs she just shrugged her shoulders and said "yeah.. that happens".. so since one of our other neighbors raises goats and his brother who lives in between us raises cattle I think it has happened before when the last dog went "missing"

she just didn't care one way or the other.. she didn't care that the highway is right there at the end of the road.. she didn't care that her dogs were running loose.. and she didn't care that I said I would have to shoot them...

when the last dog went missing they replaced it with three more... so to them the dogs are just there (and easily replaced).. running around loose.. so it's just like she didnt care if they were there or not
She didn't even bother to look worried when I told her they were STILL running around loose.. just shrugged her shoulders

when I mentioned it at the feed store this morning the owner of the store told me I was a lot kinder than anyone else locally.. he said those dogs would have been dead the first time around.. so it's expected that if your dog is out killing livestock it will get shot

Have you ever wondered how is it that people like this not only survive, but breed and pass on their stupidity?

Sarge and i were talking and if i wanted to try my hand at making some showgirls, is that a silkie roo over a Turken hen, or vice versa? been looking at what i got in the brooder and what the simplest types of crosses i can make with adding minimal chickens.

I know.. she HAS kids.. their dogs HAVE had puppies before.. but when I told her that in 63 days to expect puppies cause her dogs were mating.. it went right over her head!

How the heck does she think puppies get here?? Fedex?
no, not fed ex....they dont ship live things!
