My 22 month old SS, Welsummer & Orpington girls that I just put in the Wyandotte pen this evening, they weren't too happy I came out to lock up the coop for the night & the Welsummer & the Orp were out, they had flown over the 6' fencethe SS was running back in forth hollering for her sisters![]()
X2... that is what we had to do. Put concrete all the way around the edges of then pen and covered it with dirt (i just liked the way it looked better).uhm.... other than sinking cinder blocks into the ground along the edge (which those big guys would probably dig out anyway).. is there any way you could pour a concrete edge.. almost like a sidewalk.. around the edges?
if not you may have to lay some sort of welded wire along the ground.
I have hawks during the day, owls, coyotes, possums, raccoons during the night and lots of snakes (haven't seen one this year yet, yet). But now two foxes have been spotted on our road. Are these night hunters because these have been seen during the day? The squirrels have found food they prefer rather than chicken feed, even the leaf cutter ants are in few numbers, not gone, mind you. I haven't studied on foxes and their habits yet but their fame precedes them.We have to cover our runs - we have two red tail hawks that I know about (having seen them BOTH on the ground at the same time eyeing separate coops). I am not sure how many others we may have. And, I've heard a couple of owls around here at night.
We don't have a fox, coyote, possum or raccoon problem....nor rats. But, squirrels, hawks and owls are definitely in abundance. And, we've been told, there's a snake population in the area. We've only been here for the "cooler" months, though - so, we'll have to see what spring brings.....I like snake. Especially blackened.

Those guineas may not leave you any snakes to blacken....
that was my only complaint when we were raising them.. they killed off every lizard, skink and snake they could find... and i happen to like all three of those!

we had very brazen foxes.. they would come out 24/7 to make their kills.. especially in the spring once the kits were born.
Ol Mom fox and her kids didn't even care if we were working in the yard or pasture at the time.. they would just sneak past us.. grab a bird and run

More than my husband will allow, at this point in time....I'll get back to you, next year![]()
As for the snakes - I'm not too upset about that, if it means I won't be reaching into a nesting box and getting a hand full of black snake.........I did that as a girl and I swear it's scarred me for life![]()
I like lizards, geckos and skinks, though...
