Texas

I'm brand new to the whole chicken thing (still in the research stage at the moment). My family is PSCing to Fort Hood next week but we'll actually be living in Temple. I was hoping to find a few people in the area that I could pick their brains about some things and maybe visit their coops and chickens. I'm still working on a coop design that gives the chickies what they will need and look the way I want and I've got quite a few breeds in mind that I want, but not sure if they'll do well together or where to get them locally. :) Can't wait to be down there and settled so we can start building our coop!!! :)
Welcome to BYC and Texas! Chicken raising is always an adventure. They are never boring and always have you learning something new about them.

I love it. I think my family and friends are at the shut up about your future chickens stage haha. I am passing on the chicken love to my kids. My six year old daughter just looked at pictures of the breed of chickens we are getting and she named them all. Hahaha.

Chickens, chickens, chickens.......and ducks....These little feathered ones do have a way of finding a tender place in our hearts. My family is so glad I found this site. I can do all my chicken talk to my hearts content on here. It only took a few months of our first round of chickens for them to reach the stage of "all you do is talk about your chickens."

They are so adorable though, at least I think so. I love BYC for all the chicken talkin' that can be done.

ive always wanted to become a falconieer!!! (sp?)
i love hawks and to watch them hunt!
I love them....away from my property. I have two red-tails here that keep me on edge. Aside from my chickens, I have a four pound wonder of a dog that is just temptation defined for hawks. Makes me on edge every time I see them flying around.

I caught a hawk sitting about 30' from my back door which means it was about 30' from my chicken coop. I got pics of him. He sat there about 5 minutes and then flew off toward the back of the property. Was not happy, just hope the bird netting over the top of the run works because he was huge.

I love byc, this a place where I can come talk about my addiction with other addicts. It's a great way to help with all the hard spots and wonderful feelings. A place where I can get my daily (hourly) fix.

It's nice that my dh is an enabler. It seems one of the chicks I got to replace the lost turken has gotten very attached to him. It screeches until he picks it up and holds it. It loves to sleep under his beard. A little hard to see but if you look real close you can see the chick (that almost perfectly matches his beard).

*edited to change out picture for one that I lightened up.

The red-tailed hawks are supposed to be very trainable for faclonery.

Sadly the nest has not survived the winds today and came half apart - I found the remains of what looks like two eggs and the other half of the twiggy nest at the base of the tree. She is still up there kee-ei-ing and hopping around what remains of her nest. I hear the mate in the next lot calling back. We have had a resident pair for some time but this is the first time I have see a nest. Hopefully they will try again next year. The raccoons and possum are and will be a much bigger problem than the hawks and owls.
