Hey does anyone have any SLW around 15-20 weeks old?

I have some, but they are only 4 wks. I have 2 or 3 hens I let go of, don't know of any others around.

i have 3 right around that age as well....lookin like a trio from what i can tell.

Well more rain in Seguin right now!!! Hooray!! Hope it's falling at the house also! And yinepu I'm jealous that you are having to cull old layers! Seems like I never can keep one that long between the hawks and my dogs! But the new big coop is almost done! Then we won't have that daily Easter egg hunt!!

my oldest duck just turned 8 this year (she has immunity from freezer camp)

I think my oldest roo will be 7 this year (he also has immunity so I don't really worry about his age.. lol)....

layers tend to hit the stew pot at around 2 to 3 years of age... the ones that are heading for freezer camp will be 2 this month.. they aren't "done" laying yet.. but I have a bunch of new birds here now plus eggs in the bator that they I need to make room for!


having a coop helps a ton!.. yes, free ranging is nice.. but not when you end up losing eggs and having predators think your place is the local buffet!

I just butchered my first birds yesterday . I had never done it before but I watched a ton of Youtube how-to's so I was pretty ready . The first one went pretty good but by the second I was getting a pattern down and by the time I finished all 6 I was doing pretty good . My hubby helped me set everything up but he couldn't bring himself to help with the slaughtering or processing so I did it by myself :cd . Next time I will know what to expect and how to do it just a little different and I think it will go pretty fast. It took me 3 and a half hours to do the 6 birds from start to finish  

I'm so proud if you! (I'd happy dance but I'm on my phone) now you need to learn to Capon to put some Real meat on those bones.

Cane Corsos (Italian Mastiffs -- all imported to the U.S. in 2011 from Europe),
Rhodesian Ridgebacks (also imported in 2011),
grass-fed, mixed bull calves, being raised for beef,
dairy goats (LaMancha x Nubian & Nigerian Dwarf),
2 fickle horses,
free-range chickens (Penedesenca, Golden Sexlink, 1 Cuckoo Marans roo named Roger, Barred Rock, Sussex, & Polish / Tophat),
free-range ducks (Cayuga, Khaki Campbell, Crested mix, Rouen, & Magpie)
lavender and purple free-range guineas,
free-range Brown Chinese Geese,
and 1 barn kitty.

We have for sale or trade (as of April 2013): Rouen and Magpie ducks, Barred Rock and Golden Sexlink laying hens, and Brown Chinese Geese...all currently laying. We're willing to trade for Rhode Island Red hens, Ameraucana (or Easter Egger) hens, and Bourbon Red turkeys.

my female should lay eggs this coming winter.. that is if she decides any of my boys are 'worthy"


I have three chicks left that I still need to sex.. I'm willing to be they are all boys (why do I always get 99.9% boys???)
