Texas

I thought about it, but my area is prone to NASTY winds. I live on top of a hill and as much as I close the coop up, the wind still whips around inside unless I put something across their door. I don't have a door that I can close on my coop just yet. That was what all the pallets were for, so I could build a really nice coop for my chickies.

i spent about 3 hours last weekend redoing the door on my coup! this weekend i wanna do some work to my dresser nest boxes and add some more roosts. cant wait till the ones in the crate in the coup can intermingle freely and i can get that behemoth dog crate outta there! and i got stuff to make a PVC feeder for them as well. my lil coup is starting to come together!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!! I am so ripping you off on this idea! Thank you for sharing pictures!

I'm glad you like it. It's a fun project.

Hi there! I'm new here :) Forgive me, but I just can't read all 1115 pages of this thread to get to know everyone :) Haha!

I currently have 6 2 week (approx) chicks in a brooder, right on the TX/LA border (Bridge City, to be exact). We're excited to be new chicken owners!
Welcome! Yeah ... this is a chatty group and I get behind all the time. I'm raising my first batch of chicks too ... and already regretting we don't have acreage because I already want more!

Are you close to Bastrop if so I have a few pallets how many are you needing I would be willing to relinquish a few to the greater cause (guess that would be the chicken cause lol)
So, two disappointments in one week.  The lady who was going to give me some birds changed her mind (which is okay, I don't really NEED anymore birds but...) and the guy who was supposed to be giving the pallets decided he didn't want to get rid of them after all.  Seeing as how he was the one from my DH's job that got fired for telling the truth.  BTW, an update on that.  The other guy (the one accused of using methamphetamines)  got fired today for losing his temper and scaring another employee.  So yeah...  I should just quit believing people when they say they are going to do something.  Just assume they aren't going to do it and be pleasantly surprised when they do.

How early is too early to open the coup up for the chickens? or is there such a thing? I just found out today that starting tomorrow (thanks for the heads up, i know) my schedule is changing to a 7-4 shift...which means im leaving home at about 5:30-5:45. If i open their coop at that time will it cause a problem or will they still sleep till they are ready to come out since this will be well before sunrise?
Shouldn't cause a problem. We've had to leave the house by 0500 before and they didn't have any problems when we opened it up really early. Some came out while it was still dark, others didn't. But we didn't see any ill effects like poor laying or stress or anything. Ours tend to get pissy when we open them late. :)

ooooohhhhhhh pheasants.....i want!!!! how do you house them?

They are pretty easy to house from what I've been reading. Give them an outdoor aviary with plenty of hiding places like bushes and tall grass and a bit of shelter. The red goldens are ornamental and tend to get along well in larger groups unlike true game pheasants like the ringneck. Also, ornamentals don't require a special permit.
