Texas

I added up the cost to make a coolerbator..

with using bulbs for heating and a wafer thermostat...   67.93
using a digital thermo and bulbs... 60.86
using the digital and a heat element .. 62.39

I can fit up to 3 levels of eggs (5 dozen per level) (180 eggs total if I triple stack)

but I'm more comfortable using one or two levels just because I'm hand turning.. so that's still a minimum of  60 to 120 eggs per bator

the first one was with the wafer thermostat.. temp stays perfect.. no cold spots

my digital thermos should be here Monday for the bator #2.. and in about another week for bator #3.. the third one will also be using the heating elements opposed to bulbs

once all three are up and running the styro bators will be heading to craigslist or the dump.. lol.. one is brand new.. so it will probably head to craigslist just for fun
I'll be keeping the Reptipros for the extremely hot part of summer since they also cool as well as heat

If your gonna make a deal on those styros, lemme know! Any turners included, though i highly doubt it

To wash or not to wash eggs before putting in the incubator and under the hen? They aren't dirty dirty, just a little dried poo and some dirt. I know if I wash, I will lose the 'bloom'. Hens don't wash their eggs, so .......?

Lisa :)

i did a rough "head count"

34 EO eggs in the bators currently (2 different sources).. the ones I can see into all look like they are growing well... so I expect there has to be at least a couple of clears that I haven't detected yet since it's still early on.. wish I could see into all of them.. but my candler is in dire need of new batteries.. and I could always use the extra bator room!
9 chicks hatched out about a week or so ago
8 more older chicks (from another breeder)

plus the two adults ..in all I should end up with somewhere around 45 or 50 EOs.. give or take (hopefully I didn't miss a batch in the head count...)

that's not counting the dorkings, bresse, bantams, ameracaunas, arucaunas, assorted freezer camper purebreds, yokohamas, ducks and geese..
(who am I missing.. I know there's someone I'm missing.. lol)

i have eggs still coming in (3 dozen duck, plus a couple dozen assorted chickens).. then I'll take a break for a few weeks while I sanitize everything down again before the next round.

We have thunder and had a patch of rain but I think we encouraged it by spreading a paddock with grass seed and fertilizer and then I jumped on the bike to do a ride and that got it going.

Cream Legbar eggs successfully transferred from Curtis' place to mine. All aircells looked awesome. Weighins done - splitting them between the incubators. Here's hoping for a good hatch!

While I was there, I succumbed to temptation and picked up three of the Euskal Oiloa's he had. So sweet tempered. Mike fell in love with them when he saw them. They are new residents to The Broken Yolk.

Speaking of The Broken Yolk. I tried to post this photo earlier; but, it was being flaky...so, let me try again:

Your town is growing !! It needs a General Store and a Livery too. You have soem really cool breeds coming along to house.
