So it's lasting longer than expected? Wow. That also means I'll be covering my fruit and veggie garden up!!!!! And it's producing sooooo well. :(

well im at work now and posting on BYC soo i think that qualifies! the six in my brooder now still have some room to grow, they will still be calling that home for another couple weeks, but are basically going without their lamp. As yinepu just posted temps are supposed to drop this evening so they will get their light turned on tonite. i have mine rigged with a dimmer switch so i can turn it on just enough that they arent miserable but still able to get acclimated...i find they feather out quicker that way as well.

temps are supposed to get down into the 40's in my area tonite...is that cold enough to worry about shutting the windows in the coup for the adults? i think they would be fine, but curious as to what temps you "batton down the hatches"

I never do for the adults.. their coops are pretty open to the air too.. I figure that if the birds I had in delaware could handle the blizzard and severe wind chill that we had when I was up there that these guys should have no problems..

not to mention that several years ago all of mine were free ranging during the mini ice storm we had.. went out to find birds covered in ice and sitting on a metal gate... (they were fine btw)

Yep, that's me right now too. I'm glad we have that flexibility here. I noticed my chickens feathered out very quickly once moving them to the coop...I mean it seemed like days they went from fuzzy butts to covered in feathers. They don't really stay under the light as much as they did when they were in the brooder. They prefer to go on the roosting posts and just go into the light at their leisure. I tried putting the light over the roosting posts, but then they didn't want it there and squawked at me, made a fuss, and stayed away from the roosting post. That lasted about a day. So I put it back where it was and they're all content again. It's fun trying to learn new things and figure out what they like and what they don't like. I realize my girls just do NOT like strawberries. I have given them strawberries smashed, chunked like someone else suggested, whole, and even let them set in some water to soften them....nope...did not touch any of them the many times I tried. And strawberries are a fruit we have an abundance of in the garden so it was free and easy. :-/ I'll try again in a couple weeks when they're bigger. They actually seem to eat the veggies I throw to them - broccoli, celery, and bell pepper much more than the fruit I've given them.

Cockle-Dood, how is your little guy this morning?

GFamily: I think you will find we all have chicken brain around here.

I am with Yinepu on leaving the windows open for the older birds. I had read the book, Fresh-Air Poultry Houses by Prince T. Woods. An old book but worth the time to read. He believed in an open-front coop and he lived in Massachusetts. Of course I am a fresh air nut!

Lisa :)

so speaking of the lil man...i dont think he has anything! sime random diagnosis from a teacher and now we are required to get a Dr. approval to return to day care. the only issue is that DW just started a new job so her insurance hasnt kicked in yet...so we are paying for an unnecessary dr. appt outta pocket. was kinda heated for a while yesterday evening once all this started coming to light....

i had all of mine going crazy over some left over french fries last nite!...mine also LOVE corn...any way u can think of it
I'm trying to give them a good balance and haven't fed them any fried foods, but we eat from our own garden as much as we can and everything is organic grown or I buy organic from the store. But, next time we have some left overs might try them on it! I know they LOVE when I throw worms in their coop from the garden. We have a ton of red wiggler worms that the girls fight over.
