Anyone else have buff orps? I thought that they were supposed to be one of the most friendly breeds and my 4 weekers are still going nuts any time i go near the brooder, and i do this multipe times a day.
The cuckoo marans that are a week younger are catchin on quicker....silly chickens

I have two buff orps. They are lovely girls. Somewhat skitish.

I had a buff orfington. roo that was a total big baby. always allowed me to pick him up and let whom ever would come over pet him along with there kids would love holding him. they couldn't believe how huge he was and so friendly. a neighbors rooster got onto our land and beat him up so bad he didn't come back from it. I thought only dogs could be healing animals. my twin brother is in a wheelchair loved petting him. it calmed him. he is going to be greatly missed.

Oh what a week!!! I've had a bad one as most of y'all know how it started and it hasn't got a whole lot better! I am trying to stay positive but sometimes it's hard. Found this big fella in the coup yesterday and lost one of my EE's to him then today I got a jury summons in the mail!!! Aargh!!! Well that makes 3 bad things now so it's got to get better right? And work has been busy busy busy I didn't even get to check in until now! Hope everybody has a great night and stay warm!!!

A few things I have wondered about.
1. chickens verses fire ants... I have seen no mention on this thread since I joined so does that mean they are not a problem?

2. Covered run... what type of material do you use??? Currently we have neon yellow plastic construction netting? I guess you would call it. Works great and seems to be strong, but it was a little pricey and not the most obscure choice. I have never had any predator problems so far, not sure if that is because everything is so secure or they haven't been discovered or what.

3. Is insulating a coop a good idea given the heat in Texas?? What type do you use if you do?

4. Along the same lines... How much ventilation do you have in your coop? If you have a lot, what do you change in the winter months?

5. I notice that many people have short runs like waist to chest height. Pros and cons?? Have you ever had to get to one of your birds and found this difficult?

I am sure I have more, but they have escaped my thoughts at the moment. Thanks in advanced for any comments.

#2 - Our run extends out to the right and left of the coop in a rectangle. We're covering the sides to the right and left with tin sheet roofing, but the part that goes in front of the coop will be the sunny spot for the girls with just chicken wire on top. We're not finished with it or I'd have a picture for you.

my will-power held strong yesterday!! i had to go to the feed store yesterday to stock up for the chickens...just so happens that thursdays are when they recieve their shipments from IDEAL as well (yes i plan these things). they had so many chicks and i didnt leave with a single one!! they had RIR, BR, BA, Salmon Favs, light brahma, buff brahma, some ideal 236, BO's, red/black/gold sexlinks, Cochin bantams, Asst Bantams, and not to mention the guineas, burbon red and blue slate poults, and some beautiful ridgeback pomeranian (am i saying that correctly?) goslings!
