Looking for recommendations on heat tolerant egg layers

I've been floundering.... trying to get this question in the right place.

I posted this earlier in the breed forum and someone suggested that I try here as well.

My coop is about completed and I'm planning on getting 3 egg layers very soon (going tomorrow to look and see what's available). I'm in southeast Texas and it's a hot climate. What would be your choice of three breeds if your priorities were egg production and heat tolerance followed by personality. Egg color is not really a priority.

The farm where I'm going has the following breeds from time to time and I've numbered the list in the order that I think would do best. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

1 Plymouth Rock
2 Australorp
3 Sussex- Speckled
4 Orpington
5 RI Red
6 Brahma
7 Wyandotte
8 Iowa Blue
9 Ameraucana

All responses are greatly appreciated!

Mark

I have no personal experience with the heat so I am sorry I can't help you with your question. However, I am glad you posted it and I am certain there will be plenty who can help. Welcome to the Texas Thread.

My Australorp hen had a heat stroke last year, I had to sit her in water to cool her and put her under the mister, she did recover after about three days. If you get RIR from the hatcheries they will be Production Reds, I lost a bunch of them as adults to the heat back before I had misters in place. They Wyandottes I have owned all did well in our extreme heat here, but I still run the misters for everyone. Ever since I have had them in place I have only had heat issues with the Australorp. I don't own her anymore.

my will-power held strong yesterday!! i had to go to the feed store yesterday to stock up for the chickens...just so happens that thursdays are when they recieve their shipments from IDEAL as well (yes i plan these things). they had so many chicks and i didnt leave with a single one!! they had RIR, BR, BA, Salmon Favs, light brahma, buff brahma, some ideal 236, BO's, red/black/gold sexlinks, Cochin bantams, Asst Bantams, and not to mention the guineas, burbon red and blue slate poults, and some beautiful ridgeback pomeranian (am i saying that correctly?) goslings!

Are you sure you didn't need to go back again? That's a lot of pretty cool breeds. I stopped at Livengood Feed in Tomball to get my horse chow and they had gotten a batch of Americauner/EEs RIR and BO chicks. The little chipmunk chicks are sooooo cute. Husband hasnt crossed over to chicken keeping yet. He was interested when I was reading some of the posts on meat birds though... we have only one grocery that has decent organic chicken breast and the thought of going from chick to plate was of interest to him.
