Bah, im so jealous of the white EE's! Hows the homestead comin?

I've had chickens growing up, I also had a few chickens back in 2011 that became victims of dogs :( I still consider myself a newbie but I know enough to get started with healthy chicks and to have happy chickens. I don't however have experience hatching chicks as I've never kept roosters :p Maybe one day, but this flock will be all hens as well!

:)

Im in that same boat. As a kid i showed batam cochins in 4h but that was a while ago. In feb i got my first batch of 10 pullets, at about 10 weeks or so dogs took them all. So i restocked with some older birds from Little Wing and Chicklettesarge. Finally have some of my own chicks in the pen, plus the batch in the brooder! Currently sitting at 17 chickens(including the chicks), 3 guineas, and a brreding pair of rabbits to start that project!

People say chicken math...its been more country math for me. Good thing i dont have a barn or anything yet or id prolly have goats and sheep by now as well! Lol!

Hi all,

A question... totally new to having chickens:

I moved our 6-week olds out to the coop this morning. At what age will they be old enough to come out and down the ramp and find their way back up at night? I don't want to open the door before they're ready.

Beautiful coup man! I would leave them locked in for a week-ish so they can learn their new home. Some supervised outside time would be good though. But once they know where home is then they should be fine to come and go as they please

When i first let my little ones access it actually took them a couple days before they even went outside. So its a process

Thanks Dood.

So at 7 weeks they're smart enough and able to handle that ramp? If so, I'll open the door next weekend.

There is a closed in pen area now (not shown) where the chicken ramp comes down so they'll stay penned in until full grown then will free range the yard.

Oh im sure they could figure it out now. U just want them to acclimate. My first batch had access from day one and ended up sleeping under the ramp cause they didnt know what that big dark hole above it was

I'm sure when we finally buy some land ill up my numbers and get some quail and whatnot :) friends of mine just acquired some mini goats they are going to breed. That's going to be a hard one to turn down!! Haha

Out of curiosity, what would you raise rabbits for? Other then pets? That is something I have no experience with.
