I sure hope so! I honestly have no idea what his plans are. I know right before we moved in, a coon took out like 14 of his flock so he may be getting more hens? not sure! He has two of his hatchlings ready to be released and every time I THINK about doing it, a stinking rat snake appears.. and after loosing one of his pullets to one, I am afraid to risk it! No, no extra place at all and I am not moving them in mine (mine are still in the brooder and we are working on the coop) as I honestly have no idea which ones he wants to keep or not! How they are acting, I am not sure if the old roo would let them back in so I might make a huge mistake if I take out the wrong ones! Old white is def the king.. he is SO tame (to us) that I think he as one of their first and totally a 'baby' but the two (not sure what they are but have black feather with a blue-ish tint and wheat/gold around the neck.. totally beautiful!) are very umm.. acting like teenage males! Even refused to go in the run and coop last night for bed! The lil red roo hasn't hit that yet and the "line bred" roo already seems to know his place and has settled. So we are letting them free-range more so the hens can get away and old white "roo" can step in! I am def learning a lot by watching these! A lot on what NOT to do but learning just the same! Thanks ya'll for helping me! This newbie is kind of overwhelmed at the moment

you are doing fine. step one is always just noticing the problem. and now that you know what is going on you will be able to fix the problem in a timely fashion if it happens to you!

experience is the best teacher!

Ok.. I am starting to think after reading all the comments that maybe his lil pullet laid this! If so.. I missed her nesting and it would be her first! It's def not a 'fart' as it as a yoke.. the shell is smooth and feels like a normal egg..

She is so tiny! I have no idea her age but

maybe she laid it?

next to a 'normal' egg

Such a 'cute' lil yoke!

Thank you!! We went from me not even LIKING chickens end of April.. to living on a place with them (he keeps his flock here and lives a few towns away) and us watching 'over' them to us watching them completely for two months.. which of course we fell in love with them and had to get our own! Now we are totally "hooked!"
I was hoping to learn positive experience but after joining BYC some practices are really confusing to me so I am def doing more research than anything!

I do have one new question.. There are two babies (not sure on the ages.. they were TINY last April but out of the brooder) and I noticed one has completely crooked feet! I know these are two of his hatchlings out of his flock.. that is about all I know. I did some research and it seems that this can happen if the shell doesn't come off soon enough.. that it can be corrected.. anyone know what age max this would work with? I never even noticed until joining here

They are REAL flighty which is somewhat my fault due to my fear of snakes and after having one in the coop.. well.. it's in and out mostly for me! I am not sure what his plans are for the chick (still up in the air if it is a roo or pullet.. I think roo but I am REALLY lacking in that department!) And would hate to put it under stress of splinting it, especially if it's just a meat bird or something (no idea!) if it is too late!

does the bird get around fine? if they are old enough to be outside and the chicken isnt showing any signs of distress i would probably leave it alone. i cant answer this 100% but i would think that most "repairs" if you will, would be done in their first week or 2 when the bones are still soft...

hopefully someone else can help you a little more.

Thank you! Yes and yes..It's been in a huge cage in the coop since end of April. He wanted to let them out with the flock before we left but a rat snake had just killed one of his hens and I didn't want that on me.. to me (before we had babies of our own!) they were soo small! So I asked him to wait until he got back which is in about 10 days. Ok.. so before the bones harden.. gotcha! that is what I was thinking too.

if you ever get the opportunity to examine a day old chick, you will see their legs are super flimsy...usually a bandaid for a day or 2 will be enough to striaghten crooked toes. i got 2 free day olds from the feed store not too long ago because they had crooked toes, bandaged them up and after day 3 they were good as new!
