The coolest thing about them is that they are being studied for spinal injury research .. a opossum is one of the few critters that can regenerate it's spinal cord if severed.
WOW, how cool!!! I never knew that! Thanks yet again for sharing your knowledge, happy you are on this thread.

Ya'll need to quit bein' so mean to them Yankee Tree Huggers, ya Know how fragile they are! ;•}

[ I don't take all those extra steps either, I find that they over do everything. ]
hotrodflash, sometimes I wonder if They really do all that extra stuff. Even if they dont have full time jobs and families and lives, some of it seems so senseless. We do have "Special" chooks and even though they are still Livestock, we enjoy treating them and live to sit down and relax and watch them clown. But some of those people! Seriously?

I was on the first one trying to read it all when it got shut down, so I tried to go over to the new one and WOW, not even sure how they think the two are related. One was "simple practical chicken keeping", the second is "how complicated can we make being natural be?". So I hopped off.

I couldn't help myself. I've been stirring the pot over there all day. Man, one alternate opinion and the claws come out...

I'm thinking I may be totally done with it. Such a shame since I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and was hopeful that tenor would continue on into the new. Not so much.

I swear I have a vision of all of their chickens in little plastic bio bubbles! Hurry sterilize everything fellow natural chicken keepers! Disease is everywhere! The government will take your flock!!!! Sheesh overreact much?

Now you know why I rarely comment over there.

I don't think it is a raccoon or my dog would have been killed or at the best, really torn up.  I can't imagine any trapped raccoon, even a just weaned baby, wouldn't make mince meat out of an 8 pound little dog.  I thought opossum or maybe even baby skunks before they've developed scent, but I can't imagine skunk.  Where was mama?  If it was a skunk den I would think mama would leave some odor around even if she wasn't there--and the only reason that would be was because she had died somewhere else.  And it sounded pretty big banging up against the walls.  I think opossum.  It huffed, too, and I think opossums and skunks make that huffing sound when they are scared.

The only damage whatever it is is doing is eating tomatoes and my cantaloupe, which isn't the end of the world.  Makes my husband crazy, but I have more tomatoes (or I did) than I can eat so don't mind sharing.

I want to get a livestock guard dog when these Dachshunds are all gone.  I've too many dogs--the four Dachshunds and a big putbull kind of mutt.

I agree, possum, since the weinie came out alive. I work at the Zoo and people are always trying to give us possum and coon babies. We can't take them but give the names of Certified rehabbers in the area. We do rehab birds.
I have several very small Chihuahua's too, the LSG is there to protect everyone. Love watching them with the barn kittens.

I skim the posts and if anything sounds interesting I will read it but the "sick silkie month" almost put me in the grave. It amazes me how many they talk about culling. Really? If you are having to cull that much then you are doing something wrong.

One of my favs was the string of posts about all the fresh herbs in the nest boxes so the hens are calm while laying. Shoot, I wish my house smelled of lavender and mint everyday when I got home... Why should my hens get spa treatments when I don't? Smh...
