I have a question about fermenting.  I keep my chicken food outside in a large plastic deck box.  Can you ferment food outside?  I only read one post on another forum saying to keep it a "room temperature". and I hate the idea of moving the buckets in and out of the house for feedings.     Thanks for any help.

Mine is outside, but in the barn. Just inside the door. So it's in the shade. I have no issues with mold. I would advise if you are going to keep it outside, just find a nice shady spot.

We got just enough rain yesterday to keep the dust down a bit. Not enough to do any real good. I need to do a rain dance or something!

I used to leave my FF outside but no matter what I did, gnats would get in it. And it would cook too well in the heat. So now it's in a plastic bucket just inside the back door. Sometimes I smell it, sometimes I don't. I don't mind the smell anyway, it's a good smell.

Same here for me. Dripped and Spit all evening but all-in-all wasnt enough to do a whole lot of good. Burn Ban is still in effect in my area.

On FF-- When you "top it with water" you just fill whatever bucket till the feed is covered and some ACV for an accelerant?

Yep. Some people keep the feed always under water, but I have found that to be (1) messy and (2) unnecessary.

The water you put in should soak into the dry food, causing the food to puff up and expand. For me, I try to put enough water in so that - once absorbed - the FF is at a mushy oatmeal type consistency. No draining/straining needed.

what ingredients do you put in your FF? and i should probably have 2 seperate ones for my chickens and quail for their individual protein needs or can i feed them all the same?

I really try to keep it as easy as possible. Right now I feed my entire mixed age flock a mix of layer crumbles and scratch. I do not measure - just eyeball it to a 2/3, 1/3 mix.

If I had quail, I would ferment their normal dry good in a separate bucket.
