Texas

They are so cute!!! How long will it be before you know what gender they are? Will the dark one turn out to be black?

I've never had Silkies, but my husband (the weight lifting, truck driving He-Man) mentioned he wanted a Silkie! :D He'll just have to be content with his non-egg laying, non-broody Cochin that he hand feeds.

Y'all make me want to hatch my own. Hopefully, next weekend we'll get the chicks hoop house built and we can use it as a broody coop next Spring. IF, I can get my hub's to build that new coop for me....he kinda waffles.

Update: I got a call back from the Shar Pei rescue. Really nice person I spoke to. The "puppy" turns out to be 4 years old! I guess I'm not good at guessing dog ages! :D I'm a little timid about adopting an adult dog. A couple of years ago I helped rescue a severely abused dog, video here if interested in his story. After the rescue, I decided to adopt Hank, brought him home and as soon as he saw my cat he went after it. Sorry, can't have that. I had him back at the shelter in two hours. It made me feel like a loser, it was very emotional and I don't want to go through that again.

Have y'all ever adopted an adult dog and had good luck around the chickens?

I only adopt adults. Couldn't pay me to raise a puppy again, lol. I have hunting and working breeds, and none bother the chickens. But I also don't allow them too. We constantly work on training and engaging with 'prey'

Hi there, what types of chickens did you get? im curious because my family and I bought an 18 acre farm, we still have so much to do, but chickens are our specialty. Tame, 20 that are laying and 8 that will be soon....

TxLakeChick - Shout out to J-Town!! :) You picked THE best place for chicken info!

Valbick - Hey! :) Where are you located?? I have heavy breeds and choose for egg color. What type(s) do you specialize in?

I think im about ready to start focusing on one breed...once this last batch gets integrity ill be set on my layer flock. Next will be to decide on a breed and work towards SOP for showing...anyone have any reccomendations for a texas weather breed? I really dont want to do ameracaunas...id rather something a little more exotic but still dual purpose so my culls will still be of use to the fam.

BCM are good dual purpose birds and they need more people breeding towards SOP.

Ya know...BCM's are a nice ootion. Can go egg color or SOP with them...but it seems that last i read was that there really isnt an standard on the breed in the US right now...do people breed toward the french standard?

Another breed on my list is the dorkings...i know yinepu and kilsharion were starting a project. Too bad neither of them frequent here anymore
