Oh Lord, honey. You don't know about grits?! You poor thing.

Go look in the cereal isle at the grocery store. It'll be by the oatmeal. It's definitely a southern thing. Broken grains of corn that you cook up kinda like oatmeal. Bland on its own, but put some butter and/or cheese in it.... You'll hurt yourself.

There's something about the ants not being able to process the corn. Cornmeal can also be used to fight them.

Yes, I knew what grits were, but I wanted Jockeyeba to explain how grits got rid of her fire ants. I've never heard of ants not being able to process corn. Her post is below:

although I have noticed after the chickens got through scratching up the ants while eating the grits that the ants seemed to disappear. Guess they didn't like their spot being disturbed

You said "what are these grits," so I thought maybe you hadn't been indoctrinated yet. :)

I hadn't heard about the corn and ants thing either before coming on here. Never tried it myself. That's what the exterminator is for. Yes, we use chemicals. (*said as I run for cover)

Do I buy this at the feed store?  What do you mean by "grits"?  I haven't done anything about the numerous ant mounds--just trying to avoid them--because I've been worried about the animals, but I'm getting sick of getting stung and bitten.

I get "food grade" DE from a garden center & instant grits come in a canister in the isle where oatmeal, etc. is at HEB. The ants eat the grits & they say it expands in their stomach basically "blowing them up". I get stung everyday, its a battle, there's so many of them everywhere :barnie

If anyone can ever breed a chicken or guinea who loves to eat these little fire ants they'll be a quick multi-millionair. I think such a development might bring a resurgence in chicken keeping! Everyone in my neighborhood would want some fire-ant-eating chickens.

I actually said, "What do you mean by 'grits'?" I thought it a local name for some sort of product. I never in my life imagined jockeyeba meant grits, the cereal.
